'DESTROYER'S RUBIES' by DESTROYER Ahead of the new Destroyer LP, Have We Met, due out next month, it’s time to play a familiar game for indie fans: What is your favorite Destroyer album? While there are many great records to choose from, we always go back to this thrillingly off-kilter, Dylan-esque epic from 2006.

SPANISH LOVE SONGS This flinty, rousing punk band specializes in the sorts of millennial-dude anthems that will sound very inviting to fans of bands like Pup and the Menzingers. Ahead of their third album, Brave Faces Everyone, they’ve released the gloriously chunky single “Kick.” This song will make you want to do just that.

WILD NOTHING This dream pop project by Jack Tatum has always been a little underappreciated — while so many of Tatum’s blog-rock contemporaries have faded, Wild Nothing continues to put out evocative, icily beautiful electro-pop songs. The new single “Foyer” is culled from the forthcoming EP Laughing Gas, which is due next month.

U.S. GIRLS After years of making idiosyncratic music only fitfully acknowledged by the mainstream, Meg Remy achieved indie stardom in 2018 with the ingenious U.S. Girls album, In A Poem Unlimited. Now Remy faces the task of following up that critically adored LP, which she seems more than prepared to do with her next LP, Heavy Light, featuring the new single “Overtime.”

TAME IMPALA There isn’t a more anticipated album in the indie realm right now than The Slow Rush, the first Tame Impala LP in five years due out Feb. 14. Can you believe this album cycle began almost a full year ago? Kevin Parker has kept us waiting but the latest single “Lost In Yesterday” might be the best one yet.

Apocalyptica Puts Out A Masterpiece With Cell-O After the craziness and chaos of the holidays, it was nice to take a break and check out the latest album Cell-O from the infamous Finnish symphonic metal band Apocalyptica. If you haven't heard of them by now, I strongly encourage you to delve into their discography as they formed in the 90s and have made a huge dent in the symphonic metal realm. Since the Finnish band’s inception, creativity at the heart of the multi-platinum Apocalyptica ("cello metal" ) is no longer as shocking as it was back in 1993. The musicians, cellists Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso, and Paavo Lötjönen, along with Drummer Mikko Sirén—have won the hearts of metalheads across the world and have issued eight full-length studio releases (including their genre-breaking 1996 debut, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos), and performed alongside such greats as Metallica and Rammstein. Cell-O is self-produced by the quartet and mixed by Andrew Scheps (Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and returns Apocalyptica to their cello metal roots. A cinematic and purely instrumental masterpiece, the album features keyboard work from exceptionally talented Finnish musician Lasse Piirainen, as well as bass performed by Joonas Parkkonen (guitarist,Santa Cruz). “Ashes of the Modern World" begins our journey that seems to mourn as it reflects sorrowfully on the self-destruction of mankind. This leads to an explosion of percussion from Finnish producer, engineer and drummer Tommi Vainikainen. "Cell-O” goes for an even more melancholic perspective as the cellists dive deeper for an emotion that glides and treads equally between the light and the dark. Before you fall too deep into a darkness, the elegance of “Rise” turns the mood toward something lighter, pulling listeners upwards again. An atmospheric number, it promises that there is still beauty worth embracing. “En Route to Mayhem” rocks out while specifically highlighting the drumming talents of Sirén. This paves the way for the buoyancy of “Call My Name,” My choice on this album is “Fire & Ice” that captures these two extremities of life perfectly with an added bonus of Uilleann pipes courtesy of Nightwish’s Troy Donockley. "Fire and Ice" could perhaps be played during certain scenes from Dante's Inferno or Milton's Paradise Lost as it spirals into the netherworld for some insidious madness, before once again lulling you into the quiet cool of a spring afternoon. “Scream for the Silent,” is smooth and caressing and flows with bold deeper cadences and an ear for the electric. Cellos mournfully beguile you with the opening notes of “Catharsis" and captivate you as it progresses. Finally Cell-O closes with the epic “Beyond the Stars" with guest narrative vocals from Tom Furey. It sails upwards to the heavens and deep into the dark veils, tasting what is light and thrusting you headlong into the inky night. Apocalyptica have, again, crafted mesmerizing sounds that leave you breathless. http://www.apocalyptica.com/

Blackwater Holylight - Jizz Witch Dark, sensual doom from Oregon now, with sporting helpings of artistically executed kink (on the video side). Slightly suspicious of the title? You really needn't be – this lot are all about the otherworldly come-hither vibes and intelligent stoner-isms. A commanding proposition with an eye for risqué visuals delivered with class.

Bus - Moonchild Heavy, punchy psych-boogie from Greece now, where distortion reigns supreme and Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats (and their kind) are on heavy rotation every day – or so we imagine, based on this lil’ number. Struggling to be a ‘grown-up’ again, after the Christmas hibernation period? Wishing you could retreat to some kind of cheerfully stoned teenage bedroom setting, just for two minutes and fifty seconds? This is what you need.
  10. Open letter from 50+ organizations want Google to do something about Android bloatware Over 50 organizations including the Privacy International, Digital Rights Foundation, DuckDuckGo, and Electronic Frontier Foundation have written an open letter to Alphabet and Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai about exploitive pre-installed bloatware on Android devices and how they pose a privacy risk to consumers. Thus, the group wants Google to make some changes to how Android handles pre-installed apps a.k.a bloatware. They want the company to provide users with the ability to permanently uninstall all pre-installed apps on their devices. While some pre-loaded apps can be disabled on Android devices, they continue to run some background processes which makes disabling them a moot point. The open letter requests Google to ensure that pre-installed apps go through the same scrutiny as all the apps listed on the Google Play Store. They also want all pre-installed apps to be updated through Google Play even if the device does not have a user logged into it. Google should also not certify devices on privacy grounds if it detects that an OEM is trying to exploit users’ privacy and their data. With antitrust regulators from both the EU and the US breathing down their necks, I highly doubt Google will do what this open letter asks of them. And let’s face it – you can’t on the one hand lament Google’s control over Android, while on the other hand ask that they use said control against parties you happen to dislike. I hate bloatware as much as anyone else, but I’d be a massive hypocrite if, after years of advocating for user freedom when it comes to smartphones, computers, and other devices, I would turn around and ask Google to lock down Android devices even more to Google Play just because I happen to think carriers are the scum of the earth.

You Can Now Run Android 10 on Your PC with AndEX 10, an Android-x86 Fork While the open-source Android-x86 project is currently developing a version of their OS that lets users run Android 9 "Pie" on their personal computers, projects like Bliss OS and AndEX are already flirting with Android 10, allowing you to run a fully fledged Android 10 OS on your PC. AndEX 10 is the latest and greatest release of this Android-x86 fork that lets anyone install and run the Android 10 mobile operating system on their desktop or laptop computers, or in a virtual machine, though the latter suffers from bad video performance and distorted colors. The Inspector Cluzo - A Man Outstanding In His Field You might have caught this noisy bluesy rock duo on tour with Clutch a year or two ago, when they made at least as much noise as their headliners with half the manpower. Hailing from Gascon in France, where they run a farm (like, an actual proper farm; that tractor in their press shots isn’t just for show y’know...), Inspector Cluzo also do a brilliant stripped back set, as shown on this lush, gently haunting cut from acoustic album Brothers In Ideals.

Kvelertak - Crack Of Doom (feat. Troy Saunders) If you’re thinking the Norwegians’ new track sounds rather Mastodon-esque, there’s a reason for that - i.e. singer/bassist Troy Saunders guesting on vocals. Sung (unusually for Kvelertak) in English, it’s an energised, melodic affair that’ll likely feel a little soft for anyone expecting their trademark brutality. Still rages like a beast though.

Me And That Man (feat. Mat McNerney) - Burning Churches Behemoth man Nergal returns to his rootsy project to burn some churches… or at least to sing about them, in this steely-gazed cocktail of outlaw country, blues and dark subject matter. Grave Pleasures’ Mat McNerney does a tidy job on lead vocals, sounding deliciously romantic yet unhinged on such lyrical pearls as: ‘I’ll take up my seat next to Anton La Vey/With a Molotov cocktail and a can of gasoline’

Mansion Harlots - Panda Eyes Formed in the late 90s before disbanding a couple of years and demos later, British rockers Mansion Harlots reformed in 2017 after an interim spent in different groups. With all that in mind their debut LP (All Around A Fairground) might feel somewhat long in the making, but it all works out happily in this sun-drenched slice of sweet, pensive pop rock. One of those instantly likeable tunes that seems to appear out of nowhere, but also feels rather timeless.

The Night Flight Orchestra - Divinyls If you thought these Swedish classic rockers were all about good-time disco-friendly AOR, you were WRONG! Or so the band have said in light of this heartfelt, synth-pummelling new single. “The one thing that has kept those aging Swedish hearts beating for so long is DRAMA!” they say. “Internal conflicts, external conflicts, rumours and exaggerations.” Find this and more intergalactic emotion on their new album Aeromantic, out in February.

Body Count - Carnivore Stick two fingers up to veganism, and anything else that’s pissing you off right now, with the title track from Ice T and co’s upcoming album (due in March). In our humble opinion, the track mirrors the album really well. The old-school vibe, the heavy as hell approach and the growly yet very melodic moments showcase the evolved WITCHES of 2020! The lyrical content deals with very personal events that took place during 2019, when there was a lot of challenges around the band. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!" The album was recorded at Swiss Little Creek Studio and produced once again by V.O. Pulver and German thrash titan Schmier. The magnificent cover artwork was created by Hungarian artist Gyula Havancsák (BLIND GUARDIAN TWILIGHT ORCHESTRA, ACCEPT, POWERWOLF, STRATOVARIUS etc.) and DESTRUCTION/GOMORRA guitarist Damir Eskic. The Underground Thieves Release Instrumental Epic, «5.0.1′, Live At The Fillmore The Underground Thieves, a Philadelphia-based rock band led by artist/songwriter/producer Nick Perri, today unveiled an exciting video for their fan-favorite live song, “5.0.1.” The hypnotic performance, featuring Perri on lead guitar, was filmed during the band’s sold-out shows in December supporting The Struts at the Fillmore Philadelphia and showcases the group’s electrifying stage presence and deep musical abilities. “I wanted to take our live show up a notch and give the audience something unexpected, ” said Perri, who delivers an intense and emotional guitar solo. “‘5.0.1.’ grows and changes a little every night. Even though we have musical cues, it’s largely improvised and really keeps us on our toes.” The performance features Brian Weaver on bass; Justin DiFebbo on Hammond organ and synthesizer; and Zil Fessler on drums. The video was co-produced by Ari Halbkram in collaboration with Derek Brad, Brynn Bailey, and Steven Hirsch. It is available to stream below and on the group’s official YouTube channel. Hammerfall Releases Official Video For New Single “Second to One”, Featuring Noora Louhimo Of Battle Beast Today, HAMMERFALL has revealed a new version of their beautiful, energetic ballad, “Second to One”, featuring Noora Louhimo of Battle Beast. The original track was featured on HAMMERFALL’s chart-breaking album Dominion, which was released in August 2019 via Napalm Records. Noora Louhimo’s bittersweet vocals compliment Joacim Cans’ equally multifaceted performance, making this duet a true musical highlight of the new year. Beautiful harmonies, emotional storytelling and powerful vocal lines weave throughout the song and will light your way in dark times. The song preaches themes of trusting your instincts and following your own heart, as well as taking time for yourself. Guitarist Oscar Dronjak on “Second to One”: “It all started with Joacim suggesting we should try to write a song together with our long-time producer James Michael. We went over to Los Angeles for a weekend, not knowing what to expect. Within the first 30 minutes, I played an idea I had for James. He immediately responded with some chords and melodies, and we took it from there. Together, we wrote the music in just a couple of hours and met the next day to just finalize all the details. That’s how fast it can go sometimes when you get a feeling for something and the snowball just starts rolling, and it’s the greatest feeling in the world! The ‘hit-or-miss’ weekend in this case definitely turned out as a hit!” Singer Joacim Cans on the duet: “Already during the writing process, I had the feeling this song would be perfect as a duet – a sort of modern ‘Ozzy & Lita Ford’. I have had my eye on Battle Beast and Noora Louhimo for quite some time and was blown away by her vocal skills and stage presence. I had a feeling our voices would be a perfect match. When we decided to make the duet idea reality, I just picked up the phone and called Noora who instantly said ‘Hell Yeah!’ Working with Noora was nothing but awesome and we bonded the second we met. Not only is she an extremely talented vocalist, she is also a fantastic human being. The great connection between Noora and I really shows in the video clip for the song.” Noora Louhimo on the duet and the video shooting: “I was contacted by Joacim and asked if I wanted to do a duet with him on “Second to One”. My first thought was ‘what an honor’ and that I needed to listen to this song to make my final decision. Once I heard it, I knew it was going to be something special and agreed on the collaboration. I flew to Gothenburg for the sessions and even though I hadn’t met Joacim or the others from Hammerfall before, it felt very natural and easy to work with them. I also agree with Joacim that we hit it off right away and you can see that in the music video how comfortable things were between us. I am so excited to be part of this and to go on tour with them with Battle Beast in the end of January.”
