Modem / Router problems

Recommended Posts

My old motorola started dropping 2 or 3 times a day so I called AT&T and they said I just needed a new router.  They sent me a new netgear modem/router.  I hooked it up and everything looked good, but then it went bad.  I have a couple of wireless printers and they will print a couple of times then won't print again until I either reset the router or turn the printer on and back on.  I called AT&T and they worked for at least 3 hours using remote access.  No fix.  They sent a tech out and he worked from 6 to 11 at night.  No fix.  They finally said it was a printer problem and they don't support printers.  I called Canon and they said it was in the router and not their problem.  AT&T then sent me over to the pay for help group.  They wanted 175.00 to help me with a problem that was their fault.  I told them to stick it.  I guess I have this rant just to ask if anyone has any idea what the problem is and how to fix it?  I have run out of ideas and sure could use some help.  Thanks

AT & T have been causing issues for their customers for a while now so they can get the customers to move to a different package, which costs more. I'm betting this is what is happening. Either that or the router has a memory issue. Of course there is the outside chance that you have a virus of some kind but I don't reckon it is.

Thanks for the reply.  It has to be the new router, because it had no problems until the new router.  They did replace the router a second time to make sure it wasn't a bad router.  I have found that what I have to do is when I need to print, I have to turn the printer off and back on again.  It will reconnect when I do that.  I think the old router that just dropped off a couple of times a day was the better deal.  I think I will call them and see what I would need to swap back to the old hardware.  I can't belive I'm the only one with this problem.  I know other people must have this same netgear router.  I think I will call netgear support and see if they will talk to me about what the problem might be.  If anyone finds a fix please let me know.

Seems rather odd that the router drops the connection to the printer. It makes me wonder if the memory of the router isn't functioning as it should be. You'll find that if you reset the router a lot of times it will cause a problem

If you have At&T U-verse then I would demand a Motorola NVG589

Look here for more info:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/17684

And here for more info about AT&T U-verse:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/uverse

If it's AT&T DSL then I need to know what part of the US - like Southeast, Northwest, ect.

Hope this help (My last ISP still wants me to pay for a service that fell offline way more than it was online - Well guess what I told them ;) )

Since it's a new router you have more options than eating a lemon router. First off you will want to contact Customer Service  (you will want to record your call) and inform them that your call may/is being recorded for quality assurance. Doing this will insure that you will get the reps attention faster than anything. Be sure to ask for the reps name and ID # and what their position is at AT & T. If they asked why you need this explain you need this as so the share holders can hear this at the next share holder meetings. You may want to further explain what happened and that you have been a very devoted customer. They will of course want all your info such as name, date of purchase, receipt  number excreta. Ask that they open a ticket or occurrence report on this and ask that they provide you the ticket/occurrence number as well.

Not knowing where you live or what other issues my arise from your AT & T services I have done some research in order to provide you phone number options to call.

You couldn't find a direct number for Obama?  I think I will call a few of these and see what happens. Turning the printer on and off is just a big pain in the ass, but it looks like that is the best I can do unless I go out and buy my own moden/router.  The reason I haven't done that is that who know if that will fix the problem.  Thanks for the reply.

the  wifi  part in the  printer  is  not  being  recognized by the  router, thus  when you power off/on the  printer an  new  ip is  being generated and  is released by the  router. Not  sure of the set up details s  you may have, but  its one of IP creation.

Sorry Danm...I would give you Obama's phone but as you can see they don't have phones at the New Obama  Presidential Library... Hard to get a hold of someone that cares more about fund raising than American Citizens.  :cursing:

You could go into the router and sort out a static IP for the printer...similar to if you set up a FTP

Not sure hoe to do that. Can you give me some directions?

well, I'll try and direct you as best I can...First of all you need a blank internet page. In the top line type 192.168.1.1 That should be the IP address for the router, there may be variations to this depending on your router. You will get a small box asking you for user name and password. Now there is usually a generic set of words for this....usually something like admin/admin

Before I carry on with that..is the printer software upto date? And is it by any chance an HP printer?

Danm, go to the router manufacturers support page and download the manual and follow those instructions until you get stuck, if you get stuck, then come back. That is if you are going to enter the address yourself.

If its an HP printer they are well known for dropping connection. I've had a good look around the internet about it...seems a lot of people have an issue with those printers and there seems to be only two ways of dealing with it....one to get shot of the printer and get one that isn't an HP or two, update the software, name the printer so you can change the DNS for it, then set a static IP for it. That seems to work.

Good Information Ghost Dreams. That is why I had him going to the manual, if the did he would go to the correct OS and also be directed to the correct printer type.

Not wanting to state the obvious but.......................................I'm going to.

When you or someone has an issue with something you need to post not just the OS but the info about the system and what you are having problems with and the error messages that occur/or not. Otherwise we end up going round in circles wasting time. Present the facts, the evidence and the problem. Don't waffle on about whatever :)

ok now that we know what os you are using my next step would be to load a clean load on a pc *if you have the know how * the reason i say this is to make sure that it is not a software issue outside of the os *like windows 7* like a firewall or anti virus program.

if you load a clean os and still have problems then i would start thinking about what has changed sense this started happening like did you have any new elec. work done?

i had a friend that put in a wet-bar and suddenly he couldn,t pickup WiFi in his kitchen

something about the type of wiring they *the electricians*had used.

it interfered with the WiFi signal  just enough to make it to weak to pick up in there.

next borrow /buy a new wifi get 1 from walmart try it out if it acts up keep ur reciept  and take it back  to walmart that will tell you if it is ur wifi. option two do you have a friend where you can go to their house and use all of ur stuff there?

the reason i say this did anyone build anything new close to ur house like a new sub elec station/radio station/has anyone start using a ham radio? just a few ideals hope this gets you down the right path good luck
