There can be lots of reasons for a computer to run slowly. Are all the RAM chips active and working as that will slow things down dramatically? Have you got plenty of RAM for the OS that you're trying to load? Lots and lots of questions that would need answering.

What we really need is the specification of the computer you are reloading and with what OS before we can help much further.

And what anti-virus/malware are you using? And are you using IE, firefox or chrome as you web browser? Let's just focus on the slow pc for now we can get to the activation of the other one afterwards

I assume that the computer was faster than this when you got it or are you comparing it with another computer. We had these Dells at work but thankfully junked them recently because they all went slow

It is possible that the components have just slowed down or maybe the Ram is not very happy anymore. From a fresh install it should be back to factory fresh speed so it would, to me anyway, point to a component problem. I know that you can speed things up but removing not needed programs and stopping a lot of stuff starting up when the computer does.

You are not saying if you are having problems with the speed with start up or when operating or even if you've loaded any software before this comparison. Have you loaded any anti virus stuff?

Without this sort of info it could still be lots of different things

am using chrome browser at the moment. it is a refurbished dell, so it must be like you said, bad compoonets. using avg free just to have one, no problems with startup, nothin in startup folder only loads windows . I have deleted or not installed anything else so far. I used the disc that came with machine, computer still is slow. takes a while it seems for programs to load such as chrome and anything else.

well for starters chrome could be put on a manual startup, there is no need to have it as an automatic or even an automatic delay. Using only 1Gb of memory isn't that much really, when you think you're using chrome, AVG

to start with

refurbished Dell Optiplex GX260, xp prov2002,pentium® 4 cpu225ghz, 227 ghz 1 gb ram, windows xp disc that came with computer

is such a low end pc and then

there is such a thing in the tech world called bottle necking.

that is when you have a fast possessor/os/ video/ lots of ram even a fast hard drive.

all it takes is one thing to slow everything down .

lets say you have a fast motherboard lots of ram and fast hard-drive great sound card but a low end video.

there is your problem low end video.

your video card cant handle the amount of info coming from the board into the possessor etc etc etc.

it has always been a rule of thumb to match all of your components vid/sound/board/possessor/hard-drive/power supply.

one thing not matching or even close to it can causes problems and headaches.

this is why big company's sell so well and other company's don't sell worth a crap.

the big company's will spend more and match their components because they can afford it.

the other company's will use second grade components just to get it out the door.

you buy it thinking you have a great pc you get it home it runs great---------till you put a game on it or a program and booom bottleneck .

there are so many programs out now that need the bare minimum of 1gig just to run  thats not even counting what you have running in the background to start with..

it,s like riding around in a 4 cylinder car and you stop and pick up a big legged ole gal and i do mean a big ole gal.

and start up a hill somebody is going to end up walking half way up that hill .

hope this helps clear it up for you my advise stop playing around with those low end pc,s figure out what kind of programs or game you want to run and either build or buy a pc that matches your needs

thanx Ghost Dreams, that really explains a lot. This was my mothers computer. She bought it cause it was cheap(4oo.oo). It worked fine for a while and then she did something and screwed it up. I tried everything I knew to repair, and then I told her it was fubar, so she got another one at wally world. I ended up with it and was just trying to make it work to have another computer. I now have 4. 2 that work good and 1 I am trying to repair and a laptop thats fubar at the moment till I have money to repair it. I am disabled with 5 heart attacks and 2 small strokes, so I have lots of free time to do stuff, just no energy some days. I have been on computers for about 20 years and just learned on my own how to fix the problems that came up, usually because of little money.

This really explains  a lot to me, because I had never encounted this problem before. Thanx for all y'alls help, now and in the future.

your more than welcome legriff

i wasn,t trying to come off as mr. know it all sorry about that lol

just as you i too am a survivor from a major attack 5 yrs ago due to over stressing.

i ran two computers shops till my attack  and one of the things that i ran across alot of is the bottle necking effect.

people would bring in pc,s and want them upgraded  and i would try and explain that we could do small upgrades.

but in the long run it was cheaper to just build a new pc fit to their needs .

the pc you have is fine for slower programs built for that model but not for today's programs.

if it is a hardware problem try replacing it with the same type of parts not upgraded parts.

Tech 425 probably had the best idea. Ghost Dreams, I always appreciate any help. There is only one person that knows it all, and I will ask HIM when I get there. Being self taught, I know there is a lot of stuff I don't know. I have stated before, I have forgotten more than most people know. With old age, there is a lot that I don't remember about the little stuff, so I turn to friends to help me remember. I was doing something a while back, and I asked a facebook friend a question, and when he responded, I thought, crap I knew that. Age brings experience, but it also brings it's ugly sister to the dance.;)

Tech 425, post a link to another os. I tried to search but to no avail.I don't mind 7 or 8, although 8 can be funky sometimes. I really liked xp like a lot of others.

also, another question. I forgot before. How can I format a drive or can I, while using it? The problem is I have outdated disc, and when I try to install another os, it won't install because the os on the computer is newer than what I am trying to install. Or is there a way to force install?

Download the version you want - Then burn it DvD

Shut down the system and reboot to DvD and install as a New system

(I never use an upgrade path as bugs can still be there)

agreed tech

be sure and go into bios and set to boot from dvd/cd only.

or it may try and by pass the dvd/cd and go straight to harddrive

How  ever  u  do  it...just  do the  upgrade to  win 7...ur  pc can't handle win 8 very well...or  stick with xp...but  format the  complete  drive,, use a partion program to  create  a drive C ( for ur OS) and a drive D  for  everything else, then load  all the  apps you use.

This  is  what the  smart money  does and  faster for you  in the  long  run..
