Website knows what you've illegally downloaded

Recommended Posts

new website that keeps track of everything you download from file-sharing sites could spell trouble for the scores of people who steal copyrighted music and movies.

The site, Youhavedownloaded.com, does exactly what its name implies: It keeps a huge database of millions of media files that have been downloaded to tens of millions of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses from file-sharing websites and services such as BitTorrent. When you visit the site, it automatically scans your IP address and reveals what, if any, files you've downloaded.

To date, Youhavedownloaded has a database of more 52,286,000 users and 110,800 torrents made up of 1,918,000 individual files. A glance at the homepage shows a small sample of what people have downloaded, including the film "Spy Kids 4," the AMC show "The Walking Dead" and season four of FX's "Sons of Anarchy."

The site was built as a proof-of-concept, Suren Ter-Saakov, one of its founders, told noted cyber security researcher Brian Krebs. As such, it stops short of parsing through "dynamic" IP addresses, which change and can be used to conceal one's online activities. The site's servers don't store timestamps or gather personally identifiable details either.

Despite its limitations and innocent nature, Youhavedownloaded.com still has the capability to scare — or shame — people into thinking before they blindly download pirated material.

Ter-Saakov said he received an email from someone who asked to have his information taken down "because he was downloading porn and was afraid his parents would be able to see what kind of files he downloaded."

Beyond calling people out, Krebs said the site highlights something that's important but often overlooked among casual Internet users, which is that file-trading networks "are an extremely common and easy way to spread malicious software."

Skipping the ethical argument about downloading copyrighted material, if you're on a file-sharing site, be very cautious about what you download. There is no guarantee the song or TV show you think you're getting is what it claims to be. Make sure your computer is outfitted with anti-virus software, and to protect yourself even further, run all downloads through a malware-scanning program.

As it is in most countries if not all. It is illegal to file share. If you use torrents you are uploaing as you download. P2p apps download usually to your "share" folder. If you have files in this folder then Big Brother considers you guilty.

I wonder, why such a project should exist at all. What is the point of having it ?.

All in all, They may see (Although I do download some files from Public trackers but they don't have anything on me and they will NEVER) those who are downloading from Public-trackers but they will never ever be able to see whats happening inside private ones.

Just to add something,

The system is NOT accurate at all and sometimes it gives me a random results for example :

I visited this site today, and it showed to me a HUGE list of downloaded files mostly recent games which I have never downloaded and movies that I've never heard of and even porn o.O not to mention after a few refreshes another list showed up and finally and after a few more refreshes later nothing showed up at all.

I suggest that you don't take the results of this project too serious.

I think this is all pointing to one way: suscription services. They can offer, if they re not already doing, cncryption services for their subscribers. So you can download everything as the way you did it before but this time you ll have to pay for that.

Everytime laws make a change is to protect business rights but never to protect peoples rights even those right are constitutional.

Laws always fuc*** the people. I love them.

Always nice to proxy, on a proxy, on another proxy. Keep yourself well hidden. I mean, even if the attempt to scare, I doubt they'll get anywhere.

fine with me.. downloading is legal in our country

That'd be nice :D

Don't be sure to think a proxy-to -proxy -to-proxy can't be chased down....just use a vpn account, so with 1 path that stops with the vpn service, you're gone, invisible , otherwise far to many loose ends with a proxy...never mind who runs the proxy to begin with...IMHO

That's true... and normally, I don't really proxy into anything, just vpn and/or use my real stuff. (Depends on the activities)

Let me add a bit to this. I was recently kicked from Fileserve. I put in a complaint ticket. After TWO (2) weeks they have just gotten back to me and said "We have recently scanned all out accounts and you were tagged as a violator of our terms agreement". To say the least I'm pissed. I paid them good money to use the site. I have no uploads on the site, nor do I let anyone share it. All I've done was download files. Now I fully understand if someone hacked my password and got into my account that's a different story, but they won't tell me what it is I did wrong to violate their terms. So I've rebutted them telling them I have no uploaded files and I do not share with anyone and if someone hacked my password I'd like to know and change it. They won't even let me back in to change my password, nor will they tell me what terms of their agreement I violated. I also pointed out to them I've been a regular customer with close to a year of paying them. I also told them to tell me what I did as I want my 2 lost weeks of service back, from the day they disabled my account. No answer. If I don't get an answer by tomorrow I will go and file a complaint against them with Paypal. I want the service or my money back and I will raise hell to get it too. (I'm retired and have nothing better to do, so trust me I will raise hell!)

Just to let everyone know this is the kind of treatment you can expect from FileServe for doing nothing wrong and being a loyal customer.

I also tried the "Youhavedownloaded" site and I'm clean.
