Keyboard Shortcuts Stopped on Windows 10, How to Get Working Again? [COMPLETED]

Recommended Posts

I'm running Windows 10 on a Gateway NE56R laptop, 64 bit, which was shipped in 2012. The keyboard shortcuts, such as to copy a file or text or whatever, to duplicate a file, paste, and whatever others, stopped working about six months ago. That was in the previous version of Windows 10, I'm now running the latest version, but that has not solved the problem.

I cannot figure out how to get them working again. I hope it is something I accidentally turned off, but I have looked all over, and all the settings I find seem to be correct. I don't see any to specifically turn on or off keyboard shortcuts. I have tried tapping all the function keys, nothing affected keyboard shortcuts.

Can someone help me get these working again? You cannot know how important they are until you can't  use them.

OK, Helpdesk. I would have thought that is for help with this Website. Got it.

I just tried the first option. That sounds familiar, like I tried that many months back. I found two things under Keyboards, both HID-something, but I have only one keyboard. :) I uninstalled them both. And then restarted the machine.

Upon restart, keyboard shortcuts still do not work. (Actually, its been so long since I've been able to use them, I actually forgetting what they are, but I retried all possible combination, they don't work.) Looked in Device Manager, it has two of those HID-something items back, for one keyboard. I guess its supposed to have two? I have no other keyboard hooked up, only the built-in one.

So I tried the second option. But running it, I see that's just an alternate way to get to Device Manger to do the same thing.

So, that did not work -- and I'm pretty sure I had tired it some months ago.

Thanks. Any other ideas?

That is good to hear. I await your next golden suggestion. I researched on Google months back and tried various things until I hit a wall. So, maybe you are on the other side of that wall. I'm wondering if there is some odd setting somewhere in the OS, under settings or control panels of somewhere else, that might be causing this. I turned off various settings for privacy reasons even in the previous version of Win10. Sometimes those things do more than is obvious. But at this point,I don't even know what I turned off.

I see that. I presume that can get no driver other than offered by Windows or by the keyboard mgf? As I recall, I already checked Gateway, and I already had the most updated they offer.

How does one edit the hosts file on Windows. I know how to do that via line commands on Mac.

I don't expect to be able to get to this today, and probably not tomorrow. but by Saturday.

But give feedback, since I already have checked the driver update via windows and then at Gateway itself (actually Gateway is owned by Acer), what does this application have to offer that would not already have been checked? A third party driver, if there is one, could be a problem. But I might already have accomplished what you are suggesting.

How to edit the host can be obtained by either a third party host editor or follow these instructions below >>>

  • Take Ownership of the Host file
  1. Location  - C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
  2. To take Ownership of the Host file or any other file in Windows to edit it is done by editing the Registry (there is a download below with the correct Registry file to be able to take Ownership of files in Windows)
  • Then open Notepad with Administrator Rights
  • While in Notepad, click File and click Open
  • navigate to the Host file location (given above)
  • Add the IP Address and Website Address to the bottom of the Host File
  • Then click File and Save

that's all it takes to edit the Host file correctly....

there are different more in-depth drivers offered for hardware then the ones only offered by the manufacturer or Windows for that fact.. if u look at the image below it shows where i highlighted my drivers for my keyboard.. now those drivers were just the generic ones offered by Widows and it's manufacturer, Logitech.. now this program i offered above might not fix ur issue with not being able to use keyboard shortcuts, but u have tried everything else why not at least give it a try.. regardless if the driver program doesnt fix this particular problem, it is the best known driver program around, besides maybe Driver Booster by IOBit.. it is a program that u should have in ur arsenal anyways, just saying.. i guess ill wait on u to get back on if this helped or not.. cheers, my friend..

I think you're saying I can either edit my Registry key with the text you provided, or I can instead use the already edited key from the download link?

I don't know that I have tried "everything." I tried what I found. I'm hoping you will have something I did not find, or something I did not understand so did not try. I don't even know if one of the function keys will turn on and off the ability to use keyboard shortcuts, or if there is a setting somewhere to do that.

Might not be able to get to this until tomorrow. Maybe later today, but probably not until tomorrow.

EDIT: Oh, I just discovered the heart button. Well, you certainly deserve a heart. :)

OK, I have downloaded the driver application and decompressed it. There are no instructions with it. It is the setup exe to install it, and the KG. That's all.

You said to follow the instructions. All this provides is to install and serialize. Is that it?And block. Block first.

Have you used this very one? I feel pretty uncomfortable running a Windows KG from unknown sources. Also, does the application have a crack in it? If not, why not just get it from the developer direct so no considerations of any malware added to it?

I'll see if I can get the blocking done this eve.

EDIT: Wait a minute. I know editing the Hosts file is in order to block. But you already sent me to Zone Alarm Security application to do that. I have that installed, and set to block outgoing connections manually -- which I am presuming will send up an alert that there is a connection, and allow me to bock it. I'm not sure that is working, I haven't had any alerts so far (not even after I installed and opened QuarkXpress, so maybe that is why that installation failed). But still, isn't that going to do what editing the Hosts file would do? If so, it is much preferred not to play with the Hosts file.

EDIT2: OK, I have just been looking over Zone Alarm. I see it will not send p an alert, I have to add the applications to a list in Zone Alarm, and then say on each individual one how to handle it, allow, deny or ask. I had not done that with Quark, so maybe upon first opening, the crack was undermined. I will see after next startup if that is now working.

just so u know, that every single program i have offered u on every thread u have and i have talked on has come directly from my PC.. i have tested every program that is on my PC for every sort of malware in sandbox testing as well.. that also includes the registry file i gave u too.. that driver program that i gave u is my personal program from my PC and it is the same exact one that i have running on my PC.. heads up, im have a BS degree in network security and have been a PC repair owner for years and started in this industry before windows was ever released.. disaster recovery and security r my bread and butter.. now i say all of this not to flaunt anything.. i only say this to help u feel comfortable that whenever i recommend or give u a program or tell u to do something.. i have tested said program and i know exactly the directions i am giving u.. i never guess and will never throw random crap at anyone to help them desultory fix their PC.. that is how u break someones PC, by not knowing what the heck ur doing.. i hope after reading this u can relax when dealing with me as i will not steer u wrong.. just take a long look around this forum in the help sections and other sections and ask any member my competence level when dealing with anything related to warez or security or troubleshooting.. i got u man.. :friends2:

now just to say to u, i personally applaud to u for being wary of everything online.. so u second guessing or inquiring in any nature, instead of just haphazardly installing something is smart.. good job..

okay with all that said we can move on to the driver program.. now that isnt really a keygen, it is a license creator.. so it was my fault for not giving u proper instructions in the first place.. read below for the correct follow through details >>>

  • Edit Host file (Do the process explained in the above txt)
  • Install Program
  • Do not Run Program
  • Right click on KeyGen
  • Run as Administrator
  • Follow Image below >>>TinyTake02-08-2019-12-18-32_637003163925574386.png
  • Generated License is then propagated to this directory below >>>
  1. C:\Users\*USER NAME*\AppData\Roaming\Easeware\DriverEasy
  • Program is now successfully activated and now enjoy!!

now let us move on to the firewall.. u obviously have it set on manual, now that is good if u r an expert/advance user and im not sayin ur not.. but what ive noticed from ur responses, i personally think u should go into the settings of the firewall and change it from Manual to Training Mode >>>

TinyTake02-08-2019-12-58-42_637003187674186506.png

please visit this link below for a more in depth information tutorial, regarding Comodo Firewall >>>

now after u have followed and done as i have instructed for u to do above, please get back with me here asap.. cheers, my friend.. :friends2:

Thanks. So it isn't a KG, we're not serializing, we're cracking. OK. And thank for telling about the malware consideration.

You seem to be using the paid Comodo version. I got the free version of ZoneAarm -- my windows do not match your's.

In the free version, I get three tabs at opening page to click into. I am dealing only with the Firewall tab.

Clicking into Firewall, I have two things: Basic and Application Control. I click on Settings for Application Control, and in there I deal with the second of the two on the list, DefenseNet, and set that to manual -- so I can block some applications and not others. If I set it for automatic, everything will be blocked.

At the bottom of that page, I click on View Programs. In there there is a list of the programs on the computer, not all of them (have no idea how it automatically picks up some but not others). I can click on an Add button to add any I want to set. I can set each individually for Allow, Deny, or Ask. So, I was setting Quark for Den outgoing connections (which also then automatically set it to deny incoming connections too, which is fine). And I would do the same with DriverEasy, set that for Deny.

If I block Driver Easy in there, would that not suffice to block, and so not need to play with the Hosts file?

I might be able to get to this this afternoon. The only significant thing involved in it is the Hosts file. But I would prefer to use ZoneAlert as described to do the blocking, but will edit the Hosts file if necessary --please advise.

no that was just an accident and i copied the screenshot of the Comodo instead of the Zone Alarm, but it basically is setup the same.. so regardless if the image is different u still know what to change in the settings for Zone Alarm.. ;)

Re the settings in Zone Alarm, there is nowhere in the Free version to set "Safe Mode." It has Basic Firewall on, there is no Safe Mode setting, it is merely either High or Medium or Off, depending on Trust or Public.

It is in Application Control where I have Defense Net set to manual, so I can set it to block some applications but not others.

Bit the bigger question is: If I set that up for Driver Easy to block that, would that not handle the blocking, would there be no no need to edit the Hosts file? I recognize that Hosts file editing is blocking outgoing connection to those URLs.

No, lol. if u block Driver Easy with the firewall, how do u expect it go online and retrieve drivers for u, it cant then.. u have to edit the Hosts files like i explained in the above posts, just so it call home, but still has access to the internet so it can do its job by getting u the required drivers.. let me know how u far after that.. here is an image of Zone Alam the proper way to show u what to click on to set it for "Training Mode", which basically just means it u allow something or deny access to something it only has to be told once and it will remember the next time the exact file or program wants to do.. image below >>>

Yes, good point. I hadn't thought that through. You gave three outgoing connections from DriverEasy to block, those only, no others. Yes. And my zone Alarm does not allow for selective blocking, like my Little Snitch on Mac does, its all or nothing from an application.

OK, then for that reason, the Hosts file must be used. Might be able to get to that this afternoon, will see. Got Quark up and running, found the file blocking reinstalling it.

good good.. yes u must edit the Host files, it is a must.. after u do that follow the instructions correctly while installing Driver Easy and then with License Activator.. after that, u dont need to do anything with the firewall and it.. let it have open access and then update ur system fully and then restart and try the short keys and then get back to me after that.. :handshake:

Sorry, trying to do this now, but confused -- so final questions before proceeding. I start by editing the registry. You gave a download, and you have the text of the script that is. I have the download, it is an installer, I gather if I click on it, it will install the registry file. Do I have the option instead to edit the registry file myself with that script? If so, you haven't told me the name of that file or where it is. Might be safer, though, to let the installer do it.

So then how do I take ownership a file after I edit that registry file?! I can navigate to the Hosts file, but what step do I need to do to "take ownership?" I thought I was going to open it in some special way, or the registry file would be specifically for the hosts file. But there is nothing in the edited registry file that identifies the Hosts file.

So I'm confused. Am I taking ownership, or does this registry file simply allow me to edit any files, such as the Hosts file? When you say I need to take ownership of a specific file, it seems implicit that I must do some step to accomplish that for each file.

Or are you saying, edit that registry file, then just go edit the hosts file?

And I'm adding a file to the registry, right? Because you did not identify a registry file I might edit myself with the code you provided. I think this means the registry will have one more file in it than it did before?

When I get this straight, I can do this now.

EDIT: Well, I plowed ahead- and hit a wall. I let that installer install the registry file, so there would be no mistakes. I restarted the computer. I then opened Notepad as administrator. I then navigated to the location for the Hosts file -- but it cannot be seen from Notepad, nothing in ect folder can be seen. Notepad, as administrator, is seeing only few, certain things in all the folders.

Yes, I can from the desktop navigate manually to the etc folder and seethe Hosts file in there, and other files. But none of that appears out of Notepad.

So, what do I do?

Also, computer seems very slow now following that registry edit! This slowness better not last.

EDIT2: This is just failing. I opened the Hosts file by going to it, right clicking on it and opening it in Notepad -- but I can't open it as Administrator that way, there is no option for that. It won't let me save the edit.

Also, all the ones in there have # to start the line. Do I need to add that to the URLs you say to block - you did not put that on them?

At this point, I can't even blunder - I'm at a dead end.

okay first off the registry key u added has nothing to do with your computer running fast or slow, if u did notice anything regarding to speed it was due to the firewall and its components running during the startup of Windows.. just to let u know for to help u screenshots help immensely.. so im going to show u a screenshot below and its going to be of when i open notepad as admin in the Host file directory and why u cant see it and the next screenshot will be what u should have done.. ;)

THIS IS WHAT THE HOST FILE SHOULD LOOK LIKE AFTER TO ADD THE NEW IP ADDRESSES >>>

Tiny-Take03-08-2019-07-38-16-63700472371

when u just open the HOST file normally it will never let u edit it, its stupid and i wish it would.. it would be so much easier.. also to make this easier for u.. u should make a new System Restore Point, before doing anything.. u should have done that regardless and should get into that habit just in case.. do u have any software that u use on ur PC that restores anything? or do u just have System Restore as the only thing for disaster recovery? if it the latter, then u should after we're finished with this look into some third party programs to protect ur operating system from corruption due to errors, programs or malware.. id be happy to assist u in ur choose and offer some suggestions as well.. do this stuff in order then get back with me, okay >>>

  1. Make a System Restore Point
  2. Right Click on the Host File and select 'Take Ownership'
  3. Add the IP Addresses and Website Addresses into the Host File
  4. Install (Only If You Havent Already) Driver Easy Pro
  5. Create License File with the KeyMaker/KeyGen
  6. Run Driver Easy Pro as Administrator
  7. Scan ur system with Driver Easy Pro (Look for drivers that have to do with ur Keyboard)
  8. Update EVERY driver regardless as it will help ur system having the correct drivers
  9. Restart ur computer & post back to me telling me if the shortcuts on ur keyboard r or r not working after all of this

Cheers, my friend.. :friends2:

All you explained is good. I set it to all files -- that was the critical point -- found the hosts file. Edited it.

It won't let me save it, says the Hosts file is busy. I fought this way and that, it seemed to finally save. But when I checked it, the original unedited Hosts file is still there, it added my edited one as a .txt file.

This should be a simple, fast thing, take two minutes. Ive been at it all day. Windows make it so you have to give a HUGE explanation every last inch of the way, about every minor detail.

Why won't it let me save it , even set as All Files?

Yes, I should have thought of making a restore point! Yes, I have some applications, but would like to hear what you have to suggest. We can talk about that when all this is done. I do not have the good applications that I have for Mac (such as Little Snitch as compared to Zone Alarm).

EDIT: After I open hosts, an then add in the URLs, I use Save As to save it, and for that I change the format to All Files, since the only other format is txt. It says that file already exists, do I want to overwrite it. I click yes, and then it says:

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

I can't get past that.

Am I supposed to delete the original hosts file first? I would hate to delete that and then find I can't get it back in, I will lose the computer if I do that.

well thank u.. first off though u never have to delete the original Host file from the system in the first place.. no matter what u should simply copy the original file and paste a copy of it in a safe place, for backup.. there is a very awesome program that i use that is free and its from one of the safest tech companies in the world.. the company is called IOBit and the program is called IOBit Unlocker.. ill give info to it below..  it is used for unlocking files that the operating system has locked, so with it u can either unlock the file or move it or delete it.. it is a program that i couldnt live without.. i will make u a short video with audio so i can show u exactly what to do, now im assuming u speak and understand English.. i say this cuz the video i make u will of course be in English.. if this is an issue, then that is about as in depth as i can get in showing u what to do, besides how painstakingly in depth i have already gone in explanation to u in the above posts.. so im about to watch ''The Boys" with my son from Amazon Prime TV, u should really check that out if u like super hero characters as it is the best ive ever seen.. so give me a min and ill upload the video tutorial clip for u.. cheers, my friend.. :handshake:

OK, so you don't know why it won't let me replace the hosts file.

Hold off on the video. This is all just to find a driver I can almost assure will not exist or not help. All the time to make a video, etc., doesn't seem worth it fora long shot anyway. I was hoping you would tell me one little tweak and it would get done. On Mac, I do it with line commands to take a copy of the hosts file to the desktop, edit it there, then some line commands to replaced the real hosts file with the edited one. The line command gets around this kind of issue, it overwrites the file. But other people on Mac do it other ways.

I could take the hard drive to my Mac, plug it in externally and change the files at will. But the hosts file is special, needs to be put in properly, and I doubt that would work. And you won't even be able to boot the machine with it be in in there properly,s o I could lose everything. Can't try that.

Let's sleep on it. I can be in touch tomorrow morning.

You never explained, have I taken possession of it simply by doing that registry edit, or now that I did that, is there something else I have to do?

Yes, English.

i do know how with simple explanations and i have tried to explain it as simply as i possibly can to u on how to do it properly.. im offering the video that wont take me but 10 mins to make and finalize to show u eye to eye on how to do it correctly.. for all of the time ive spent typing multiple posts, i could have done the video and saved myself so much more time then i can even count.. should have done it from the beginning.. im actually glad this all played out this way as from now on i will make a short video for every single support question asked, so there isnt ever any confused from me trying to explain it and from others trying to then reinterpret it and then apply it.. so i guess im grateful to u for this in the end.. i will still make the video and publish it and put it on here, so just in case someone else might have a similar problem they can just watch the video and have it solved for them or any other future problems.. cheers, my friend.. :handshake:

<<< EDIT >>>

so, it quite literally took me less than 10 mins to make the video, publish it and upload it for u.. if the video with audio doesnt get u perfectly setup, then im terribly sorry that is by far the best that i have to offer u at this time.. so please enjoy and get back to me after u follow this tutorial and let me know if it helped.. if it didnt help u get the pesky keyboard keys to work, well at least now u have the best driver update program on the market; u now know how to properly edit and reedit ur Host files and u now have the ability to take ownership of every file on ur PC which is very important to be able to do.. so in my book its a win all the way around.. cheers..

Yes, I understand your explanations, I have done that precisely. I last night Googled, and everyone says what you said -- except the bit about taking ownership and editing the registry, no one says to take ownership or edit the registry. In checking properties on the hosts file, yes, I do have ownership now. I don't know if that is a "process" running, and so maybe the process the message I get says is what is preventing me from being able to save.

All the instructions from Googling says I should be able to save, except one said there are sometimes problems with that in Windows 10, so here is how to do it in Windows 10, and then it said absolutely nothing different than it said for Windows 7 or that you have been saying.

I am now downloading your video, will watch it -- but I already understand what you have been saying, this issue is not me doing anything other than how you have explained. There is something processing the hosts file that needs to be stopped, but I have no idea what that is. Well, unless it is the bit of taking ownership via the registry edit. (BTW, my speed is back, that was a one-time thing, probably things loading.)

I note, Properties says my hosts file has not been modified since 2016, which might be when I went up to Win 10.

EDIT: I just watched your video as far as editing the hosts file. Yes, that is all what I understand and have done a hundred times between yesterday and this morning. It will not save the edited hosts file. Not if I hit only save, not if I hit save as. Yes, am opening Notepad as administrator. The message I get says it can't be saved because another process is using the hosts file. I have done it with nothing opened on my computer other than Notepad, I still get that message, all day yesterday, and this morning. Hmm, do I maybe need to turn off something Windows Defender, might that be the process blocking this?

EDIT2: I wonder if starting up in Safe mode will stop whatever is processing with the hosts file? Maybe try that and do the edit and see. I'll have to look up how to start in Safe mode. Or some other minimal startup.

EDIT3: SUCCESS! In Safe Mode, I was able to get the hosts file editing and saved. I then checked it, and yes, but held the edit. So, now I can move to the next things, after I take care of some other things around here first. Stay posted. Next its to install the driver app, and then see how it works and run it. At the moment, I going back to a regular boot.

EDIT 4: DISAPPOINTMENT. Dang. Got the driver app installed and cracked to volume license. Then I ran the scan. It found quite a few drivers it said were outdated -- but gee, some were for the processor and things like that, which I know MS updates automatically! Nonetheless, none of those were for the keyboard. As for those, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

In the list under the outdated driver list, all the ones it found with up-to-date drivers are listed. And that is where both of the two drivers I have for the keyboard are listed, as HID Keyboard. Both of those have the same up-to-date driver. So, a new driver is not going to fix this keyboard shortcut issue. And I already uninstalled those drivers and let them regenerate, so they already are a fresh installation.

So, interesting application, will keep it around. Not going to jump at updating driver that I find hard to believe are not with the best driver already.

But we now have done all we can about this keyboard shortcut thing possibly being the driver.

So that is finally ruled out. Are we at a dead end now? Or do you have any other ideas?
