Google is doing this to save itself in the future. The way the MPAA is closing down everything, very soon google's services like youtube and google drive will also come under fire. The way i see it is that Google is stepping in and trying to prevent the MPAA from getting a toehold in the government. It is a good thing also for small companies with the support of a giant like Google. It gives them more credibility in court and also more media coverage.
