  7. Apple has famously never made any of its iOS apps for other platforms, while all of the competition make apps for iOS. Google have their Search app - which includes Google Now - while Microsoft have OneNote, with rumors swirling that Redmond could be thinking about the whole Office for iOS suite. Speaking at the D11 conference hosted by AllThingsD, Tim Cook claimed that Apple has "no religious issue" with bringing iOS apps to Android, but it doesn't make sense to do it presently. "[Y]ou will see us open up more in the future," Cook claimed, "But not to the degree that we put the customer at risk of having a bad experience." This ideology harks back to the Steve Jobs era when Apple wanted to own the "whole widget" not just parts of it. When asked definitively if Apple will open up more, Cook replied with one word: "Yes." Despite this statement, tensions between Google and Apple have not subsided and Apple is still engaged in a lawsuit with Samsung.
  8. The FBI seized and ran a child pornography website for two weeks in November 2012, according to a recently filed letter to the court. The site, referred to only as “Website A” in court documents, was confiscated and then run by the Bureau from November 16 through December 2 in an attempt to identify its more than 5,000 customers, reports the Seattle PI. This marks a departure from the FBI’s normal mode of operation, being the first time a child pornography sting akin to this operation has been executed, according the Seattle PI. Law enforcement agencies typically rely on tips or undercover officers posing as customers to root out pedophiles and producers of child porn. Agents were unable to identify users solely through service records from the site, so the FBI opted to continue operation of the site to track them down. At the time “Website A” was shut down, its 5,600 users had shared over 10,000 photos in over 24,000 posts, nearly all of which were related to child pornography, according to an FBI report to the court. The brief summation of the site’s contents revealed the despicable intentions of its users. Forum topics included resources for avoiding detection online through encryption, and threads titled “How to lure a child in my car,” “Meeting other pedos in real life,” and “Do kids LIKE anal sex?” As charges have not yet been filed in the case, there are no names publicly attached to the investigation. The FBI declined to comment, stating that it remains an open investigation, but details will be a matter of public record once prosecution begins.

  11. In an attempt to simplify the complex and often abstract world of cyberwarfare, for the past year the Pentagon has been developing a system called Plan X that essentially turns the process into a video game. Sophisticated cyberattacks require the resources and expertise of highly trained professionals, and even after lengthy preparation, the results of such attacks are unpredictable because of the huge number of variables involved. DARPA wants to distill this process into a platform that can be understood and used by a broader array of military personnel, and turn cyber weapons into munitions that are as simple to execute as traditional weapons of war. In order to allow a military operator to design and deploy a cyber effect, Plan X lays out a battery of tools on a large touchscreen panel and allows the user to interact with networks and computers in a manner that is comparable to a video game. This doesn’t require the extensive training and level of proficiency that is currently required of military cyber personnel. In an interview with Wired, Dan Roelker, a cybersecurity specialist who came up with the idea for Plan X, said “Say you’re playing World of Warcraft, and you’ve got this type of sword, +5 or whatever. You don’t necessarily know what spells were used to create that sword, right? You just know it has these attributes and it helps you in this way. It’s the same type of concept. You don’t need the technical details.” DARPA has recruited some major talent to work on Plan X, which is sure to give it even more of a science fiction feel than it may have taken on otherwise. Frog Design, responsible for the design of the Sony Walkman and the Apple IIc, is working on the hardware, while Massive Black is tackling the user interface. Massive Black is well known for their work on Bioshock and Transformers, among many other big movie and game titles. Rudimentary push-button hacking tools are already available on the internet in various forms, but military-grade cyberwarfare capabilities at the touch of button sound like the stuff of Wargames or Ender’s Game. Perhaps future generations won’t ever have to leave their desks to fight wars.

  13. Nokia Lumia smartphone owners can already download an exclusive Windows Phone 8 app designed to promote the upcoming movie Man of Steel. Now there's a rumor that Nokia will go even further to help hype up the next attempt to reboot the Superman film franchise. WPDang.com reports, via unnamed sources, that Nokia will release a special limited edition Man of Steel version of the upcoming Lumia 925 smartphone. Nokia first announced their latest Windows Phone 8 device earlier this month, which is a variant of the Lumia 920 but with an aluminum rim that makes it much lighter. The smartphone is due to be released in June in Europe and the US and that happens to be around the time that Man of Steel is scheduled to be released to theaters. The article has no word on what differences Nokia plans to put into the Man of Steel Lumia 925. If this story is true, this would not be the first time that Nokia has worked to promote a movie starring a DC Comics superhero. The company released a limited edition version of the Lumia 900 made to tie in to 2012's Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises.
  14. In a new example of the entertainment industry’s disconnect with reality and their overreaching tactics, an anti-piracy group known as the Commission on the Theft of American Intellectual Property has issued a 89-page report in which they cite billions of dollars in losses, and suggest a wide variety of measures to combat this nuisance -- like legalizing the use of malware to punish suspected offenders. The group says that copyright holders should be allowed to take more assertive action against intellectual property thieves. And though they start off with seemingly reasonable requests like allowing a file to be rendered inaccessible if the user gained access to it illegally, it quickly scales to something resembling ramsomware. The scheme calls for software to be pre-installed on users’ computers to identify whether they are illegally copying, storing or consuming copyrighted content. From there a number of scenarios are proposed, such as locking down your computer up and taking all your files hostage until you contact law enforcement to face the consequences. This is supposed to “stabilize a cyber incident” and provide time to gather evidence against you. That’s just scratching the surface, though. More drastic measures mentioned in the report include the ability to infiltrate a network to retrieve or destroy the stolen files, snapping a picture of the offender using his or her webcam, and even physically disabling or destroying the hacker’s own computer or network. None of this is currently permitted under US law but the commission would like to see that amended to allow defensive action. It should be mentioned that the report has a strong focus on foreign threats and goes beyond just piracy by attempting to thwart hacking and economic espionage on US companies. The problem -- aside from giving the entertainment industry an unprecedented amount of power -- is that it doesn’t draw a clear distinction between the theft of corporate trade secrets and more casual piracy such as torrenting a TV show or movie.
  15. According to various reports, we know that Samsung is working on multiple versions of its Galaxy S4 smartphone, including the upcoming launch for the Galaxy S4 with the “Nexus experience.” We know that another potential Galaxy S4 model could be the Galaxy S4 Mini, a device that hasn’t been announced officially despite being rumored for some time; but we do know there will be an upcoming Samsung event in London on June 20th that will showcase new Galaxy devices, as well as ATIV devices. However, plans for announcing a Galaxy S4 device may have been spoilt as Samsung’s official app catalog for the United Kingdom lists the Galaxy S4 mini with model number GT-9195 as a supported device ahead of its unveiling. The listing has since been removed, but a screenshot can be found below: The Galaxy S4 mini is expected to feature a 4.3-inch qHD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean when it launches.
  16. Razer has been expanding well beyond its core group of PC gaming mice lately. In 2012, it launched its first true PC, the Razer Blade gaming laptop. Earlier this year, it launched the Razer Edge and Razer Edge Pro gaming tablets, both using Windows 8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lbqwf7SrK7Q&feature=player_embedded Now Razer is apparently teasing us with a new YouTube video that is apparently supposed to hype up a big announcement on Thursday, May 30th. The video shows an extreme close up of a US dime coin rolling on its edge before it hits something that we can't quite make out. The dime then stops rolling and falls on its side, as the phrase "thinner than a dime" pops up. We are guessing that whatever product Razer is going to reveal on Thursday is indeed "thinner than a dime" in some way. Just for reference, the current US dime happens to be just 1.35 mm thick. The fact that Razer has launched a teaser video well ahead of this unknown product launch means that it might be something pretty major, perhaps for a new product line that the company has not yet entered before. Hopefully all will be clear on this front in three days.
