How Fast Your Application Starts Up? AppTimer is a free portal testing tool that is mainly used in benchmarking an specific application’s start up, which can be very useful when comparing the performance of different products on the same hardware, or comparing the performance of the same product on different hardware. What it does is to run an executable, such as Excel.exe, Notepad.exe, etc., a number of times and time how long it takes for the application to reach a state where user input is being accepted. After each run of the application AppTimer will attempt to close the application in an automated fashion while logging the startup time measurements to a log file. Frankly, using the tool isn’t that simple and intuitive, especially when naming the Windows Name and picking the detection method and Close Method. Most of the time, type in the executable name without the extension name, and select the options like below, you should be able to get the result you are looking for. On above screenshot, I did a test on starting up Excel application for 5 times, as well as a test on Notepad before that. Here is the log file showing the results on both tests. Obviously, it’s way better than utilizing a stopwatch, especially for those applications that only take a split second to start up, e.g. notepad. Last released almost 4 years ago in 2010, AppTimer works smoothly on most popular Windows platforms, from XP to Windows 7 and 8.
