Despite the beach being in a remote location and being signposted, it has enjoyed a surge of visitors looking to touch up their tan during the hot weather. The secret stretch of land, which is located next to the Gaddings Dam, has been filled with Britons armed with beachwear, lilos as well as buckets and spades. Lauren Hurst, 24, has lived at nearby village Todmorden all her life but only visited the beach for the first time last week. 3. 20 Indian children dead after eating free school lunch Wednesday, July 17, 2013 - 07:26 AM Children receive treatment at a hospital after falling ill soon after eating a free meal at a primary school in Chhapra district, India. Picture: AP Children receive treatment at a hospital after falling ill soon after eating a free meal at a primary school in Chhapra district, India. Picture: AP At least 20 children have died and more are sick after eating free meals at a primary school in eastern India. Bihar state official Abhijit Sinha said another 27 children and the school cook were in hospital in Patna, the state capital, 10 of them in a serious condition. The children, aged between eight and 11, fell ill yesterday soon after eating meals in the school in Masrakh, a village 50 miles north of Patna. They were rushed to a local hospital and later to the state capital for treatment. The meal was cooked in the school kitchen, but school authorities stopped serving the meal as children started vomiting. PK Sahi, the state education minister, said a preliminary investigation suggested the food of an organophosphate used as an insecticide on rice and wheat crops. It’s believed the food was not washed before it was served at the school. Malnutrition is one of the major health concerns among Indian youngsters and many state governments have launched midday meal programmes for poor children. Bihar state chief minister Nitish Kumar has ordered an inquiry and authorities have suspended a food inspector and registered a case of criminal negligence against the school’s headmaster.
  4. Australian gored at Spain bull run in "very serious" condition PAMPLONA, Spain | Sun Jul 14, 2013 6:48pm IST (Reuters) - A 23-year-old Australian woman gored in the chest on the final day of Spain's annual San Fermin bull-running festival was in a "very serious" condition, local authorities said on Sunday. The woman, who was only identified by her initials J.E., was injured during the early morning run, where bulls chase people down the cobbled streets of Pamplona in northeast Spain, and immediately taken to hospital for surgery. She suffered several fractured ribs and damage to her right lung, according to a medical report released by authorities. The bull run is believed to date to the 13th century but is known to have continued virtually every year since 1592, when the festival was shifted from September to July. People are thought to have joined the running herd sometime in the 1800s. The festival, which runs for one week, was made famous internationally by Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises", and it attracts thousands of foreign visitors. Three Spaniards and one American were also injured on Sunday, authorities said. Two of the Spaniards were described as having "light" injuries, while the diagnosis for the other two runners had not yet been released. On Saturday, a 19-year-old Spaniard was left in a "very serious" condition after runners fell and piled up at the entrance to the bullring, where the run ends. Several people were trampled. On Friday, three men were gored, including an American who had his spleen removed. The San Fermin bull run came under state regulation in 1867 and there have been 14 deaths there over the past century. The last person to die was a 27-year-old from Madrid gored in the neck by a bull in 2009. Runners dress all in white with red neckerchiefs and many spectators stay up drinking all night in bars beforehand. After the run, bulls are usually killed by bullfighters in the ring.
  5. North Korean ship carrying hidden 'missile equipment' detained after leaving Cuba A shipment of weapons system components hidden in sugar containers was intercepted on its way from Cuba to North Korea after being searched on suspicion of drugs. NBC's Mark Potter reports. By Ian Johnston and F. Brinley Bruton, NBC News A North Korean cargo ship was stopped near the Panama Canal and searched on suspicion of drugs, but it was carrying something sweeter — the apparent parts of a surface-to-air missile system, hidden inside containers of brown sugar. The State Department said any shipment of arms or related material aboard the freighter would violate at least three U.N. resolutions. The ship was on its way home from Cuba. Panamanian authorities said the captain of the ship tried to kill himself after officials boarded it Monday and began searching the containers that were supposed to contain the sugar. Courtesy IHS Maritime The captain of the North Korean ship Chong Chon Gang tried to kill himself as the vessel was searched, according to Panama's President Ricardo Martinelli. Independent defense analysts and U.S. officials said Tuesday that the equipment appeared to be a radar control system for surface-to-air missiles, and that the behavior of the crew suggested the equipment was being shipped covertly. But Gordon Chang, the author of “Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes on the World,” said it didn’t matter what was in the cargo hold. “What’s important is that the North Koreans were able to smuggle dangerous equipment into our hemisphere,” he said. Panama said it seized the ship on suspicion of drugs as it headed for the Panama Canal. Reuters reported that Panama had also detained 35 members of the crew. President Ricardo Martinelli went so far as to post a picture of one piece of seized equipment on Twitter “so that the world knows that you can’t transfer non-declared, war-like material through the Panama Canal.” “The Panama Canal is a canal of peace, not of war,” he said. A State Department spokesman said that the United States supported Panama’s decision to seize the ship and offered Washington’s help if Panama needs it. In a statement from Cuba's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, officials said the vessel was carrying "240 metric tons of obsolete defensive weapons -- two anti-aircraft missile complexes Volga and Pechora, nine missiles in parts and spares, two Mig-21 Bis and 15 motors for this type of airplane, all of it manufactured in the mid-20th century -- to be repaired and returned to Cuba." "The Republic of Cuba reiterates its firm and unwavering commitment with peace, disarmament, including nuclear disarmament, and respect for International Law," the statement added. Staff at IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly, a respected military affairs magazine, said the picture tweeted by Panama's president appeared to show a radar system for surface-to-air missiles — specifically an SNR-75 Fan Song fire-control radar system for a family of missiles known as SA-2. U.S. officials confirmed the model to NBC News. The SA-2 is a Soviet-era system in Cuba since the 1960s and was the class of missile used to shoot down American pilot Gary Powers’ U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union in May 1960. The magazine said one possibility was that Cuba was sending the equipment to North Korea for an upgrade, and that it sent along the cargo of sugar as a payment for the services. But under a second scenario, the magazine said, the equipment might have been on its way to North Korea to fortify the country’s existing air defense network, which is dense but based on obsolete weapons, missiles and radars. U.S. State Department Spokesman Patrick Ventrell responds to reports that a North Korean ship has been inspected in Panama and contained hidden weapons. Jane’s said that North Korea’s high-altitude SA-2 surface-to-air missiles “are ineffective in a modern electronic warfare environment.” Richard Meade, editor of the British shipping journal Lloyd’s List, said the detained vessel was called Chong Chon Gang. He described it as a general cargo ship owned by the Chongchongang Shipping Co., outside Pyongyang. Meade said he was still checking the Chong Chon Gang’s movements — the Lloyd’s List Intelligence service tracks ships’ movements via satellite — but initial information showed the vessel was in China on Jan. 25, then Russia on April 12. It then arrived on the Pacific coast of Panama on May 30, and passed through the Panama Canal on June 1. Richard Hurley, senior maritime data specialist with IHS Aerospace, Defence and Maritime, said the ship’s destination was listed as Havana, Cuba, when it passed through the Panama Canal on June 1. He said it was lower in the water when it returned to Panama, according to data normally provided by the ship’s staff and supplied to satellite tracking services, possibly because its cargo was heavier. Both Meade and Hurley said the ship did not appear on satellite tracking after leaving Panama. Meade said the ship could have turned off its tracking device. Hurley added that satellite tracking sometimes fails in the area, dense with maritime traffic. The El Universal newspaper reported that the crew and captain were taken to Fort Sherman, a former American military base now controlled by Panama. Minister of Security Jose Raul Mulino told the paper that if it was confirmed as a case of weapons smuggling Panama would consult with the United Nations to establish whether the crew should be handed over to an international body. Last October, North Korea claimed that the U.S. mainland was “within the scope” of its missiles, although military officials have told Congress that the United States could intercept a North Korean missile.
  6. Cancer-Stricken Girl’s Plea for a Pie Yields a Pizza Bonanza (CNN) — With all due respect, thanks but no thanks. That’s the message from the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles after it was deluged with pizzas. It started all when Lauren Hammersley taped a message to the hospital room window of her 2-year-old daughter Hazel, a cancer patient. “Send Pizza. RM 4112.” (Photo Credit: Reddit) On Saturday, a Reddit user took a picture of the window from the street. And word spread. Fast. Reddit users, who have a long-standing mission to “restore faith in humanity, one slice at a time” with their “Random Acts of Pizza,” delivered. They leapt in to action for Hazel Hammersley. One pizza arrived. Then another. And another. By the time more than 20 pizzas had been delivered, the hospital had to issue a statement on their website, urging everyone to stop. “You’ve made a little girl very happy but NO MORE PIZZA IS NEEDED,” the hospital said. “The Hammersley family will be going to bed very full and very thankful for the compassion they received today.” Hazel was diagnosed in April with Stage 3 Neuroblastoma — a type of cancer found predominantly in young children and infants. She will soon begin her fifth round of chemotherapy treatment. On her blog “Our Little Hazelnut,” mother Lauren Hammersley wrote: “We have been absolutely humbled and surprised by the outpouring of love and support from the online community and can only hope and pray that this brings awareness to Neuroblastoma and the Childhood Cancer Community.” She also said the family was able to share in the fun with other families in their ward. “Several other children and nurses came into the room, with music playing, and had themselves a wonderful Pizza Party,” she said. It was sight that melted hearts like mozarella.

  8. Scan a Doc to PDF With Your Android Phone Scanning documents and OCRing them once meant slowly feeding them through a desktop scanner before running slow, clunky OCR software. With the advent of powerful smartphones, you can now quickly scan and OCR documents with your phone’s camera. This is perfect for receipts or any other physical documents you run across that you might want to read later. No need to save all those business cards, pamphlets and other pieces of paper — just scan them with your smartphone’s camera. Google Drive Android’s integrated camera app doesn’t have any OCR capabilities. You could snap a photo of your document with the camera app and call it a day, but if you want to store that document as a PDF and perform OCR on it so you can search and understand its content, you’ll want to use a specialized app. Google Drive is one such app that’s made by Google. It has integrated document-scanning and OCR capabilities. Snap a photo of a document and a PDF copy of the document will be saved to Google Drive. It will also use the power of Google’s servers to perform OCR on the documents, making it searchable in your Drive. To do this, open the Drive app on your phone, open its menu, and tap Add New. Tap the Scan option in the list to scan and upload a document. Note that you could also add the Drive widget to your home screen and tap the camera icon on it to quickly open the Scan interface — this is useful if you frequently want to scan documents. You’ll now see the scanner interface. Point your camera at a document and tap the button to scan it into Google Drive. The great thing about this sort of app is that it’s not just a photo — Drive will extract the document part from the rest of the photo so it can be saved separately as a PDF file. You’re free to rotate and crop the document before saving it to your Drive. Evernote If you already depend on Evernote to organize your brain, you’ll be happy to hear that Evernote has this feature integrated. It can snap a scan of a document with your phone and save it as a PDF to your Evernote account, where you can access it from anywhere. Evernote’s OCR features will allow you to search through such scanned documents. From within a note, tap the plus-sign button and select Page Camera. Just center a page in the frame and tap the button to scan it. The nice thing about Evernote’s interface is that it makes it easy to scan multiple documents and attach them to a single note without ever leaving the scanner interface, while Drive is focused on saving each document as a PDF file with a separate save process. Other Apps Other services also have integrated document-scanning and OCR capabilities, but you may not want to rely on any one service. There are a wide variety of apps in Google Play that will scan a document to a PDF and save that PDF to your phone’s internal storage, where you can do what you want with it — but most of these apps probably won’t perform any OCR on the document. Many of these apps are paid apps, but if you want a free one, we recommend Scan to PDF free. This app has no advertisements, watermarks, or other limited features. It will allow you to quickly take a snap of a document and, like the other services above, it will strip out the document part of the image and save it as a PDF. Unfortunately, you’ll have to adjust the cropping part yourself — but it’s a fast, free way to turn a document from a piece of paper into a PDF file stored on your phone’s storage. For an app that’s more focused on the OCR part of the equation, try Mobile OCR Free. It won’t save a PDF copy of your original document, it will only extract text from a document — either one in an existing photo or one you take a snapshot of with the app. This is convenient if you just want the text from a document, but bear in mind that OCR isn’t perfect and you may have to do some tweaking by hand. Sure, this solution won’t provide all the quality of a high-end desktop scanner, but it’s much faster and more convenient. It makes scanning and OCRing documents something the average person might actually want to do over the course of their day.
  9. Reasons to Use a Third-Party DNS Service Your Internet service provider runs DNS servers for you, but you don’t have to use them. You can use third-party DNS servers instead, which offer a variety of features that your ISP probably doesn’t. We’ve covered third-party DNS servers like OpenDNS and Google Public DNS in the past, but now we’ll explain just why you might want to change your DNS server. Possible Speed Improvements Third-party DNS servers can be faster than your ISP’s DNS servers. This isn’t guaranteed — it will depend on your geographic location, how close the third-party DNS servers are to you, and how slow your ISP’s DNS servers are. If all you care about is speed, you may see an advantage from switching to a third-party DNS server — or you may not. To be sure, you should run a DNS benchmarking tool like Namebench, which will make DNS requests to your current DNS server and other DNS servers, testing how long each server takes to respond. Popular third-party DNS providers like Google Public DNS or OpenDNS may be faster for you. Namebench will let you know if they are. Note that Namebench can’t benchmark every factor. For example, Google Public DNS and OpenDNS participate in “The Global Internet Speedup” initiative, which allows participating DNS services to know your IP address and respond with IP addresses closer to you, increasing connection speed. Other DNS servers, like the ones offered by your ISP, aren’t as quick to implement such new technologies. . Possible Reliability Improvements This goes hand-in-hand with the possible speed improvements above. If your Internet service provider does a poor job of keeping their DNS servers running fast and stable, you may experience periods of time when websites fail to load or load very slowly while the DNS request takes some time to resolve. If your ISP isn’t doing their job properly, switching to a third-party DNS server may give you a more reliable experience. Parental Controls If you have young children and want to set up web filtering, there are a variety of different ways you can do it. One of the easiest ways to configure web filtering is to change your DNS servers to OpenDNS. Change the DNS server on your router and you’ll be able to configure parental control settings on the OpenDNS website, allowing you to block certain categories of websites and view the websites accessed from your home network. This is particularly convenient because, after changing the setting on your router and setting up parental controls on the OpenDNS website, the settings will apply to every device on your home network — PCs running any operating system, game consoles, smartphones, tablets, and more. When a DNS request is made for such a website’s IP address, OpenDNS returns a different IP address. The user’s browser connects to that address and sees a message saying the website they want to access has been blocked. Bear in mind that this isn’t foolproof. A user on your network could just change their device’s DNS server to bypass the filtering. Young children wouldn’t think to do this, but teenagers could likely foil it — just like most parental controls. Phishing Protection OpenDNS also performs filtering to block phishing sites. Modern browsers have built-in phishing protection, but if you run a network that includes Windows XP computers running Internet Explorer 6, enabling OpenDNS will give all of these computers some identity theft protection they wouldn’t otherwise have. Other DNS services don’t offer this feature. For example, Google Public DNS does not include any content-filtering features, as it aims to just function as a fast DNS service without any of the frills. Security Features Third-party DNS servers like OpenDNS and Google Public DNS also offer security features that haven’t yet been implemented by many ISP’s DNS servers. For example, Google Public DNS supports DNSSEC to ensure DNS requests are securely signed and accurate. Your ISP’s DNS servers may not yet implement such security features. If SOPA had passed, no American DNS servers would have supported DNSSEC, as SOPA would have made DNSSEC illegal. Americans would have had to use foreign DNS servers if they wanted the benefit of DNSSEC. Access Geoblocked Content Special third-party DNS servers can also allow you to access geoblocked content. For example, switching your DNS server to the free Tunlr will allow you to access media like Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer, no matter where you are in the world. When your computer makes the DNS request, the DNS service performs some tunneling to make the service think that you’re elsewhere in the world. This is a convenient option because it allows you to access these services on any device just by changing the DNS server on your router. You shouldn’t use Tunlr as your main DNS service. As a free service, Tunlr wouldn’t be able to put up with the load, so they artificially delay DNS requests — switching to Tunlr permanently will slow your web browsing way down. If you use Tunlr, you should use a tool like DNS Jumper to quickly switch to it when you need it and switch away when you’re done. UnoDNS and Unblock-Us work similarly and don’t have this restriction, but the downside if you have to pay for them. Bypass Web Censorship Some Internet service providers and countries block websites only at the DNS level. For example, an ISP may “block” example.com by redirecting its DNS entry to a different website. If the website is blocked in this way, changing your DNS server to a third-party DNS service that doesn’t block the website will allow you to access it. A real-world example of this occurred when The Pirate Bay was blocked in the UK. People could change their DNS servers to access it again. Note that websites are often blocked at the IP level, so this won’t always work. For example, the Great Firewall of China uses a variety of tricks to block websites, including DNS blocking. Namebench includes an option that checks DNS servers for censorship to determine whether your current DNS servers are censoring their results. If you want to switch DNS servers, you’ll probably want to change your DNS server on your router, which will affect your entire home network. You could also change the DNS server on a single computer, which will only affect that computer.
  10. John Franklin Riggs Swims 5 Hours To Save Family After Boat Capsized Near Maryland's Deal Island A stock photo of a skiff. John Franklin Riggs, a 46-year-old man from Maryland, swam for five hours to save his family after their boat capsized near Deal Island. Wikipedia Commons A Maryland man swam for five hours to get help for his family, including two children, after their boat foundered in a storm off Deal Island. John Franklin Riggs, 46, swam five miles over three hours, climbing rocks along the shoreline to reach a nearby house and get help for his family, Fox News reports. Angela Byrd, a nearby resident, was awakened by her dog’s barking. When she went to her front door on Wednesday, she spotted Riggs, soaking wet and barefoot. “He came to the right house,” Byrd told the Daily Times. “He said, ‘I’ve been swimming since sundown; I need help.’” Byrd immediately called 911, allowing authorities to rescue the Riggs family from their 16-foot capsized boat, Fox News reports. Rescuers were able to distribute life jackets, saving the sailors from drowning. Related "It wasn't an option, it just had to be done because they had been out there all night," Riggs told WBOC about his decision to swim for five hours. He added that the lives of his family, including his father, sister, niece, and nephew, depended on his efforts. "Just not knowing what's going on with them while I was gone. It was getting nasty and blowing harder. And not knowing if we would be able to find them when we got back out there," Riggs told WBOC. According to Deal Island Fire Chief Donald Ford, Riggs dealt with “some of the worst tides in the Chesapeake Bay” during his five-hour swim. “It’s an amazing story,” Ford told WBOC. “The man’s a hero.” The man's sister, Contessa Riggs, said that the family clung to the wreckage of their boat during Riggs' five-hour swim. “I’ve never been so happy to see search boats in my life,” she said. “It took him five hours to swim ashore … We clinged to the side of the boat and got stung by sea nettles in the dark.”

  15. http://youtu.be/ztmZhGL6sVc Man creates 'invisible headphones' by implanting magnets into his ears A man has implanted magnets into his ears to use as invisible headphones in a remarkable example of DIY transhumanism. Rich Lee, a self-described transhumanist and body modification fan (or "grinder"), was inspired by a similar idea posted on the Instructables site that featured two small in-ear magnets stimulated with a magnetic coil necklace connected to an amplifier (you can see the video with this piece). The difference is that Lee's actually implanted his inside his fleshy lobes. The coil necklace is completely hidden by his clothing, and the scars from the implants are also unnoticeable, so it's unlikely you'd realise that as he was standing in front of you he could be listening to music. In a way it's reminiscent of the bone vibration Google Glass uses instead of conventional earphones. There are other uses, too, he writes in h+ magazine: "Listening to music is nice and probably the most obvious answer, but I intend to do some very creative things with it. I can see myself using it with the GPS on my smartphone to navigate city streets on foot. I plan to hook it up to a directional mic of some sort (possibly disguised as a shirt button or something) so I can hear conversations across a room. Having a mic hooked up to it and routed through my phone would be handy." "You could use a simple voice stress analysis app to detect when people might be lying to you. Not to say that is a hard science, but I'm sure it could come in handy at the poker table or to pre-screen business clients. I have a contact mic that allows you to hear through walls. That might be my next implant actually." He also plans to give himself a kind of bat-like echolocation ability by rigging it up to an ultrasonic range finder -- as objects get closer, the in-ear hum builds, and as they move away it gets quieter. This makes a lot of sense for Lee, because he knows he will soon become legally blind. "I'd love to hook a geiger counter up to it and experience the world of radiation," he writes. "Living near the old Nevada nuclear testing grounds provides a lot of opportunity for this. I wouldn't mind finding some yellow cake uranium while on a hike because that stuff is expensive. Hearing a gentle hiss around warm objects might be a novel way to experience the thermal realm. The implant is going to allow for a lot of new senses." It's still very much untested though, and the sounds he experiences are altered by other factors, like if he's got his finger in his ear or not. It is also incredibly important that he doesn't walk near any unexpectedly powerful magnets.

  19. Obama tries to cash a check without ID President Obama walks into a major American bank to cash a check. As he approaches the cashier he says “Good morning Ma’am, could you please cash this check for me”? Cashier: “It would be my pleasure sir. Could you please show me your ID”? Obama: “Truthfully, I did not bring my ID with me as I didn’t think there would be any need to. Let me be clear, I am President Barrack Obama, the President of the United States of America!” Cashier: “Yes sir, I know who you are, but with all the latest Government regulations, and monitoring of the banks because of impostors and forgers, etc. I must insist on seeing ID” Obama: “Well, just ask anyone here at the bank who I am and they will tell you. Everybody knows who I am!” Cashier: “I am sorry Mr. President but these are the bank rules and I must follow them.” Obama: “Make no mistake, I am urging you please to cash this check!” Cashier: “Look Mr. President this is what we can do: One day Tiger Woods came into the bank without his ID. To prove that he truly was Tiger Woods, he pulled out his putting iron and made a beautiful shot across the bank into a cup. With that shot we knew him to be Tiger Woods and cashed his check. Another time, Andre Agassi came in without his ID. He pulled out his tennis racket and made a fabulous shot where the tennis ball actually landed in my coffee cup. With that spectacular shot we knew that he was Andre Agassi and cashed his check. So, Mr. President, what can you do to prove that it is truly you, and only you, as the President of the United States?” Obama stood there thinking, and thinking and finally says: “Honestly, there is nothing that comes to my mind. I can’t think of a single thing. My mind is a complete blank.” Cashier: “Would you like the cash in large or small bills, Mr. President?”
