E3 2013: Microsoft reveals more on Xbox One Smart Match

Recommended Posts

Microsoft's Xbox One game console may require owners to connect to the Internet at least once every 24 hours to play games. However, the company is trying to make finding those online matches easier for its customers.

In a post on the Major Nelson website, Micheal Dunn, Microsoft's Program Manager on Xbox Live Services, offers up some info on Xbox One Smart Match. Dunn says that Smart Match will allow players to find the perfect multiplayer experience without having to wait in line for a long time for a suitable player to show up.

Basically, while the Xbox One connects to its cloud-based servers to find an online game, gamers can "switch to reading a quick social blog or watch a viral video" without having to stare at a lobby screen for long periods of time. You can see an example of that above where a player is spending time playing Ryse on the Xbox One while waiting for his Killer Instinct Smart Match to start up.

Dunn also talks about the new reputation system for the Xbox One, which is designed to help people find the best players and avoid other players that might not have the best intentions in mind when they go online. Dunn states:

The more hours you play online without causing others to have a horrible time the better your reputation will be, similar to the more hours your drive without an accident the better your driving record and insurance rates will be.

Xbox One players with a good reputation will have a green icon, while others who need improvement will be colored yellow. Players with poor reputations are naturally going to have a red color icon until they change their ways.
