Half Monk 697 Report post Posted August 10, 2013 In 2012, Microsoft decided to cut the number of SKUs for Windows Server 2012 from 12 to just four (Datacenter, Standard, Essentials, Foundation) compared to earlier Windows Server releases. For the upcoming launch of Windows Server 2012 R2, the four SKUs remain the same, but the price of one of them has skyrocketed. In a licensing price sheet (in PDF format) on Microsoft's site, the Datacenter SKU for Windows Server 2012 R2 is shown with a price of $6,155, not including client-access license fees. That's much higher than the than the $4,809 price of the Windows Server 2012 version of Datacenter. Even though the Datacenter SKU does allow for unlimited virtual installs of Windows Server 2012 R2 on licensed hosts, it's still a big price jump compared to just a year ago. In a statement sent to ZDNet, Microsoft said the price change was "based on market conditions and based on the overall increased product value and choice." The other three Windows Server 2012 R2 SKU prices remain the same as as last year, with the Standard version selling for $882 and Essentials priced at $501. The Foundation SKU does not have a listed price as it is designed for OEM use only.
