In total, 692 passengers and crew were aboard the ferry MV St. Thomas Aquinas at the time of the accident. The collision occured during the dark hours late Friday. The ferry soon listed and began to sink, prompting the captain to order the ship to be abandoned. According to coast guard officer Joy Villegas, two coast guard vessels were dispatched to the scene of the accident which was not far from shore. Other vessels also aided in resuing passengers. The cause of the incident was yet to be determined. A sea rescue operation was launched on Friday after a ferry carrying nearly 700 passengers collided with a cargo ship in the central Philippines

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine coast guard launched an extensive rescue mission on Friday after a ferry collided with a cargo vessel outside the Cebu International Port. In total, 692 passengers and crew were aboard the ferry MV St. Thomas Aquinas at the time of the accident.

The collision occured during the dark hours late Friday. The ferry soon listed and began to sink, prompting the captain to order the ship to be abandoned.

According to coast guard officer Joy Villegas, two coast guard vessels were dispatched to the scene of the accident which was not far from shore. Other vessels also aided in resuing passengers.

The cause of the incident was yet to be determined.
