LONDON, United Kingdom -- A stuntman who wowed crowds at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony when he parachuted into the stadium dressed as the fictional British spy James Bond alongside another stuntman dressed as Queen Elizabeth II, has been killed in a wing-diving accident.

Mark Sutton, 42, was participating with 20 other wing-suit flyers at a wing-diving event in the Swiss Alps on Wednesday. He crashed into a mountain ridge at a speed of 124mph and was instantly killed by the impact.

The accident happened near Martigny close to the Swiss-French border.

Regional police officer Jean-Marie Bornet confirmed the cause of Sutton's accident was still being investigated. "We do not know what caused his death but we know it was immediate," he said.

"One hypothesis is that he was too close to the mountain," Bornet added.

Wing-suit flyers wear special jumpsuits are designed to allow the wearer to glide through the air at high speeds. Wing-divers usually deploy a parachute for landing.
