freak 1,032 Report post Posted September 13, 2013 A House Called Flip-Flop 1 of 16 Next Samy Kamienowicz and his wife, Hedy, hired Dan Brunn to design their Venice Beach home. The architect was given nearly complete creative freedom and a budget of $8 million. The couple, who own a chain of camera stores, wanted wall space where they could display their collection of photography, like the image in the kitchen by Anthony Friedkin. The UFO table and Nastro swivel chairs are from Emmemobili, and the Iki pendant light is from LAB Arturo Alvarez. Previous Next The three-story home sits on a corner lot, steps from Venice Beach. Previous Next The master bathroom is part of a suite that occupies the entire third floor. The Spoon XL tub is from Agape and the sink, tub and shower fixtures are from Dornbracht. The bench was designed by Mr. Brunn. Previous Next Sliding-glass doors open to a balcony off the master bedroom, where the owners like to take in the ocean views. The lounge chairs and planters are from Gandia Blasco. Previous Next The shallow pool in the front and part of the side yard cools the house in the absence of air-conditioning. Previous Next The couple’s bedroom contains a Night and Day bed and 808 side tables from Molteni and a painting by Alberto Vargas. Previous Next Like much of the home, the second-floor living room is furnished sparingly, with modern pieces like the Oscar leather chair from Walter Knoll, the Surface coffee table from B&B Italia and the Groundpiece sofa from Flexform. Previous Next The home offers views of the ocean and beach. Previous Next A model made of Legos was a gift from the architect, a memento of the house’s design and construction. Previous Next Storage is hidden behind a glass cabinet system from Valcucine in the downstairs family room. The Hi-Cove chair is from Molteni & C. The photograph by Jim Marshall in the corner is of the Beatles at Candlestick Park. Previous Next The Flip-Flop House takes its name from a row of interlocking doors that open like louvers to the width of a foot. They were the architect’s way of maximizing the ocean views while providing enough wall space for the couple’s artwork. Previous Next Before building the house, the couple lived in a condo in Venice Beach. After that experience, Ms. Kamienowicz said, “I wanted my own house and a project, a challenge.” Dan Brunn, the architect, joined them at home. Previous Next Another view of the home’s louvered design
