NVIDIA SHIELD shipments delayed until sometime in July

Recommended Posts

Earlier this month, NVIDIA announced that its portable game console SHIELD would start shipping on June 27th, and with a $50 price cut to $299. Now it looks like the folks who have put down their money on pre-orders will have to wait a few weeks longer to get their hands on the SHIELD.

In a blog post this week, the company announced it had made a "hard decision" to delay shipments of the SHIELD until sometime in July. The post stated, "The issue relates to a third-party mechanical component, and we’re working around the clock with the supplier to get it up to our expectations." The company did not get any more specific on what the issue was with the faulty part, nor when shipments will start for the console. It did apologize for the extra wait and added that "we want every SHIELD to be just right."

The delay puts a bit of a damper on NVIDIA's first entry into the gaming hardware space. First announced at CES 2013, the SHIELD packs the company's newest mobile processor, the Tegra 4, running on the latest version of Android. The SHIELD has a five-inch display that's attached to a game controller with dual analog joysticks, a full D-Pad and more. In addition to running Android games, the SHIELD is also supposed to stream PC games via WiFi from a user's Steam library.
