We’re horrified and saddened to learn that Rik Mayall has died

It’s been reported by credible sources that actor and comedian Rik Mayall passed away earlier today

He was just 56 - no other information has yet been released.

Much of his best-known work was done with comedy partner Adrian Edmondson

They formed double act ‘20th Century Coyote’ after meeting at university in Manchester in the 1980s, later restyling themselves ‘The Dangerous Brothers’ for Channel 4’s alternative comedy showcase Saturday Live

They also starred together in student comedy classic ‘The Young Ones’

Which Mayall wrote, with Ben Elton (pictured) and Lise Meyer.

Mayall and Edmondson later wrote and starred in the brilliantly nasty sitcom Bottom

Loosely inspired by their time on stage in a version of Beckett’s Waiting For Godot, but with more hitting each other in the face with household inplements.

Other popular roles included Tory MP Alan B’Stard in ITV’s The New Statesman

Which he revived on stage in 2006.

And nauseatingly arrogant swashbuckler Lord Flashheart in Blackadder

And we haven’t even mentioned Kevin Turvey, Filthy Rich & Catflap, his wonderful Jackanory reading of George’s Marvellous Medicine or the Spinal-Tap-pre-dating spoof rockumentary Bad News Tour.

Mayall joined Twitter in 2010, and in typical form, tweeted only once, telling us all to fuck off

And here he is captured in fine form mucking around at an event in 2008

We decided to celebrate the life and work of one of comedy’s all-time greats with a quiz

Rest In Peace (or possibly In Anarchic Lunacy) Rik, you will be missed!
