  1. Winners in the Landscape Photographer of the Year awards. Henry, an ecology student at St Andrews University ,won in both the 'Youth Your view' and the 'Youth Urban view' categories. His beautiful floating feather image was taken at Glengavel Reservoir in Lanarkshire. The teenager was inspired by the endless buzz of Glasgow city centre for his second victorious shot. "It was taken on a freezing Friday night in December! "I had found this location by looking at local maps of Glasgow, I was looking for somewhere where I could get above the traffic and see both directions. I used a longer exposure time, which forced me to use a tripod, but allowed me to create the light trails from the cars. "The long sweeping road coming up from the left was something I wanted to make sure I included as it really adds to the feel of movement." Lesley Smith took the 'Urban view' prize for her photograph of the moment the iconic Red Road flats came down in Glasgow. Demolition was due to be 1pm but there was a delay and by 12 the crowd was beginning to grow . I had taken my tripod and had quite a good spot and refused to move for the next few hours." The 44-year-old medical secretary did not realise she had captured the moment so clearly until the dust settled. "The ground was shaking and I think I took about 15 shots in total. As the dust was settling I had a quick peek at my camera and sighed with relief that I had them all in focus." Eight-year-old Rowan Ashworth was the youngest to take home an award for his image of a climber at remote Hushinish on the Isle of Harris. He won first prize in the 'Youth Living the view' category. This brooding snapshot of stormy weather in Sutherland's Loch Stack was produced by Dougie Cunningham. He won the 'Classic View' award. Fifteen-year-old Hannah Faith Jackson, from Strathaven, won the coveted overall Young Landscape Photographer of the Year with her picture of a street reflected in Glasgow bar's window.
  2. Scottish photographer snapping London's super-rich Dougie Wallace is an ex-Army turned street photographer. His mission is to 'shine a wee bit of a torch', or a pair of popping flash guns, on the exclusive streets of Knightsbridge, London where he snaps the ultra-affluent elite, the facelifts, the designer bags (and dogs) and the millionaire boy racers. “Welcome to Harrodsburg. Home of the one per cent. Playground of the super-rich... The thing about the money is, it’s all out there. It’s all on display. It’s part of the whole show. So I’m just capturing that really.” The area Dougie Wallace calls “Harrodsburg” is bounded by the luxury department store Harrods in Brompton Road, Sloane Square and the Ritz Hotel in Piccadilly. It is historically one of the richest parts of the country, and Qatar-owned Harrods makes the area particularly popular with Qatari tourists, many of whom rent or own houses there, as well as Saudis and Russians. Wallace says he's simply on a wealth and privilege "safari" in a world where he can "spot the facelifts from the other side of the street". The Harrodsburg project grew out of previous work which juxtaposed photographs of people in taxis and buses in Kensington and Chelsea, and in the Calton district of Glasgow close to where he grew up. The serious point in that image series, made visible by the contrasting effects of deprivation etched on subjects' faces, was male life expectancy in the London enclave is 84; in Calton it is, at 54, the lowest in the UK. They come here and spend their money, it’s alright. I’m not bothered about them displacing the local residents, traditional residents, whatever you want to call them, with the mustard chinos and all that... I’m not going to bleed purple pish out my heart for them, you know what I mean? I’m just showing what’s happening, just shining a wee bit of a torch on things, you know? Don’t shoot the messenger. When people go bonkers at me, the last thing I do is delete it. You just walk on. It depends, sometimes you feel like standing your ground with them. It they threaten to call the police I just say 'on you go, I’ll give you the number - 999'” The area is changing – the Sloanes and the old money, they’re all dying out. And there’s a new breed coming in, and they’ve got even more money. I’m telling you - you wouldn’t believe the things you see round here... Knightsbridge is like another world... the people round here... the money. It’s unreal.
  3. A man and a woman who have never met before …. find themselves assigned to the same sleeping room on a transcontinental train. After the initial embarrassment and uneasiness, they both go to sleep. The man in the upper berth, and the woman in the lower berth. In the middle of the night the man leans over, wakes the woman and says, "I'm sorry to bother you, but I'm awfully cold and I was wondering if you could possibly reach over and get me another blanket?" The woman leans out and, with a glint in her eye says, "I have a better idea, just for tonight let's pretend that we are married." The man happily says, "OK. AWESOME!" The woman says "GOOD....Get your own *&^%$@! blanket

  15. How to spot a ransomware scam Ransomware is particularly sneaky, and can infect your machine if you accidentally pick up malware from a website or download. It operates in an alarming way, locking your PC out of the blue and accusing you of committing a crime, before demanding payment to make your system usable again. Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts files of infected PCs before demanding an extortionate payment for the encryption key needed to recover data. The malware typically arrives in the form of malicious email attachments prospective marks are encouraged to open or through exploit kits that exploit software vulnerabilities to push malware onto the PCs of visiting surfers. A recent multi-country study by security software firm Malwarebytes found that nearly 40 per cent of businesses had experienced a ransomware attack in the previous year. Of these victims, more than a third had lost revenue and 20 per cent had to stop business completely. More than 4,000 Brits have had their computers infected with ransomware this year, with over £4.5m paid out to cyber criminals, according to Action Fraud. The signs of a ransomware scam Below is some real example of a ransomware pop-up message. It is an alarming message to see flash up on your screen, since it freezes you out from accessing your PC and accuses you of committing serious crimes: The software often claims to be from the FBI or local police, as in our pictures illustrated here. The message may have a veneer of authority, such as imagery of police logos, but there is nothing official about it. The scams often claim to have found evidence of pornography on the computer, embarrassing targets into paying the stated fine. In our examples here, a huge catalogue of alleged crimes has been listed. However, in reality, no one who had committed any of these crimes would be let off with a fine paid online. The ransomware message typically demands a voucher from a payments company such as Ukash, because these do not leave a trace, unlike regular online bank transfers. What you should do, if you computers are infected with ransomware: You can avoid the scam as you would any malware. Never pay the ‘fine’, even if you cannot access your PC. You will only be putting money into criminal pockets. making the payment, this may stall not unlock your PC anyway. If you have been affected, you can usually remove the ransomware from your system by running a recovery tool, such as the free download Norton Power Eraser. However, because your computer is locked, you may need to use another machine to download the program, then save it to a USB stick and run it on your computer after starting it up in Safe Mode. How to protect yourself from ransomware: The good news is you don’t need special ransomware products to protect yourself or your computer network from ransomware. Rather, the same methods of protecting yourself that been recommend for your general computer security apply: use firewalls up-to-date anti-virus anti-spyware software keeping your browser, system software and other software up-to-date with the latest patches. Further, we recommend you use a pop-up blocker if you do not already. A lot of ransomware is delivered via pop-ups. And of course, be very careful about downloading software, games, screensavers, etc. which can include the ransomware. Last but certainly not least, it is vital to back up not only your personal computer files very regularly, but also your system files as well.
  16. The History of King Kong on Screen Few cinema characters have achieved the worldwide popularity of King Kong—the massive, monstrous ape with inclinations for beautiful blonde women and climbing skyscrapers. Kong debuted in 1933's King Kong from RKO Pictures, which was based on an idea by filmmaker Merian C. Cooper about a giant ape terrorizing New York City. For over eighty years, Kong has reigned supreme as one of the greatest movie monsters of all time feared because of his ferociousness, but beloved for his tender heart and tragic circumstances. With a new Kong film out, cinema fans should familiarize themselves with Kong's nine-decade reign as the Eighth Wonder of the World. March 1933. King Kong Kong's first movie was a smash box office hit and was one of the first major blockbusters in cinema history. At the time, the stop-motion special effects were groundbreaking, and the thrilling climax on top of the then-new Empire State Buildings is one of the most iconic sequences in cinema history. After premiering at New York's Radio City Music Hall on March 2 and at Hollywood's Grauman's Chinese Theater on March 23, King Kong wowed audiences during the Great Depression and over and over again in the following decades when it was re-released in 1938, 1942, 1946, 1952, and 1956. It remains the best-known of all King Kong films and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1991. December 1933. Son of Kong Unsurprisingly, after the big success of King Kong RKO Pictures rushed a sequel, Son of Kong. The sequel features the protagonists of the original, filmmaker Carl Denham and Captain Englehorn (again portrayed by Robert Armstrong and Frank Reicher, respectively), returning to Skull Island and discovering a smaller albino relative of Kong that they dub "Little Kong." Son of Kong was a minor hit for RKO, and aside from the similarly-themed Mighty Joe Young (1949), RKO stayed out of the giant ape movie business afterward. 1962. King Kong vs. Godzilla In the mid-1950s, a giant movie monster took Japan by storm -- Gojira, or as it is known in the United States, Godzilla. It was no surprise that Toho, the studio behind Godzilla, struck a deal with RKO to use King Kong in this crossover film (at the time, RKO was already seeking a studio for a proposed "King Kong Meets Frankenstein" movie that never went into production). Unlike the original Kong movies, King Kong vs. Godzilla features an actor in a King Kong costume, and the suit in this film is of low-quality. Still, the movie was a huge success for Toho and remains the Godzilla film that has sold the most tickets in Japan—over 11 million! 1967. King Kong Escapes Because of the massive success of King Kong vs. Godzilla, Toho wanted to bring Kong back for a rematch. However, while that film never happened, in 1967 Toho produced this King Kong solo film as a spinoff of the popular King Kong animated series that aired on television in the late 1960s. King Kong Escapes features Kong fighting a robot imitator, Mechani-Kong. It was far less successful than King Kong vs. Godzilla, even though the Kong suit was much better! 1976. King Kong After Kong's period in Japanese cinema, he returned to American film in a remake of the original movie produced by famed producer Dino De Laurentiis. This version of King Kong was set in contemporary New York and featured Kong climbing the then-new World Trade Center towers instead of the Empire State Building. Along with Kong, the film starred Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, and Jessica Lange. This remake had a more comedic take, and like the Japanese films Kong was portrayed by actors in a suit. Like the original, it was a big box office hit. King Kong also won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. 1986. King Kong Lives De Laurentiis' company made a direct sequel to 1976's King Kong, King Kong Lives, ten years later, in which Kong has been in a coma for a decade after falling from the World Trade Center. He is revived via a blood transfusion from a giant female ape called Lady Kong, and the pair escape and wreck havoc against the military. Unlike the previous film, King Kong Lives was a box office bomb and received extremely negative reviews from critics. 2005. King Kong Before directing the Lord of the Rings trilogy and winning Best Picture and Best Director Oscars for The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Peter Jackson was hired by Universal to remake his all-time favourite movie, which is the original King Kong. However, the project stalled until after Jackson finished Lord of the Rings. This high-budget remake of the 1933 film—set in its original era—featured the most realistic Kong yet as portrayed by noted motion capture actor Andy Serkis. The film also stars Naomi Watts, Jack Black, and Adrien Brody. King Kong was a box office success and won three Oscars for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. 2017. Kong: Skull Island The latest King Kong film is another reboot, this time set in the 1970s and features a variety of military personnel on an expedition to the mysterious Skull Island where they come into conflict with the mighty Kong. The cast of Kong: Skull Island includes Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Brie Larson, and John C. Reilly. Terry Notary—a former Cirque du Soleil performer who has experience playing apes from the Planet of the Apes series—portrays Kong via motion capture. The studio behind Kong: Skull Island is Legendary Entertainment, which also released the 2014 American Godzilla reboot. Future After Legendary Entertainment releases a Godzilla sequel in 2019, the studio aims to create a "MonsterVerse" franchise with 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong, a remake of the 1962 Japanese monster movie. Should that film prove successful, we can expect to see Kong up against all kinds of massive beasts in the franchise's sequels.

  19. iPhone dropped into frozen lake still works over a year later Michael Guntrum's iPhone survived a year at the bottom of a lake A lucky fisherman has been reunited with a lost iPhone that survived more than 18 months at the bottom of an icy lake. Michael Guntrum, from Knox in Pennsylvania, was fishing on Kyle Lake last year when the handset dropped through a tiny hole in the ice. “Lost my phone today,” he wrote in a Facebook post on March 2015. “Long story short. Ice fishing,+ hole in ice = iPhone at bottom of lake.” Not even the most optimistic person would expect to see that iPhone ever again, but Mr Guntrum appears to be one lucky fisherman. He got a lucky break when the lake was drained in September 2015 and eventually found stuck under some mud by mechanical engineer Daniel Kalgren. BuzzFeed News reports Mr Kalgren was exploring the bottom of the lake with a metal detector when he stumbled upon the phone. It actually worked! The phone actually turned on He took the iPhone 4 home and put it in some rice to dry out - amazingly the handset actually turned on and he was able to retrieve the owner’s number. telegraph
  20. New Hacking Method Goes After Hardware, Not Software A Dutch team discover a new hacking method but are the big tech companies listening? There is chilling news coming from a Dutch team of security researchers who discovered a brand-new method of cyberattack. Typical hacking attempts require installing malicious code on a computer then trying to find where that code is located within the system’s memory. As difficult as that is to pull off, it still leads to quite a high number of cybercrimes each year. But the tech experts have now found a new method that relies on the way the computer’s processor categorizes files in its memory. According to a breakdown of the discovery by Andy Greenberg for WIRED, “The attack exploits the way microprocessors and memory interact: Processors have a component called a memory management unit that maps where a computer stores programs in its memory. To keep track of those addresses, the MMU constantly checks a directory called a page table.” It is this directory that hackers can exploit, tracking their code directly to its location by following the MMU’s progress. Since it is stored in the processor’s cache and since JavaScript can actually write to this cache, even the mere visiting of a website can infect your computer now. You no longer have to click a link and work to install the virus; it is sitting in wait for the next person to happen along. So Is It Really A Threat? The team who discovered this method has taken pains to let the right people in on it, but so far, the response from major tech companies has been sluggish. Microsoft and Intel reportedly told WIRED there is no threat from this kind of attack, and while not the answer security experts were looking for, at least it was an answer. Other companies did not even bother responding with a comment. Apple has reportedly created an update to tighten things up in the Safari browser, but they did not specifically address this form of attack. The worst possible news is that the only way to fully protect from it will be to strip the hardware, not issue a software update. As long as MMUs work this way, any update will just be a small hurdle for hackers to jump. wired
  21. Sir Roger Moore: a life in pictures Sir Roger Moore has died in Switzerland aged 89 after a short battle with cancer. The actor will forever be remembered for his most famous role as James Bond 007, which he made his own through a unique brand of humour and swagger. We look back at this life and career through a selection of pictures. Sir Roger Moore rose to fame on the charm and good looks that accompanied his skill as an actor. Here's a very young Roger, pictured in 1953 with Jennifer Haking, as he began his career as a model. He was a keen rider and made sure to start his day with his horses when pursuing his acting career in Hollywood in the late 1950s. One of his earliest roles was playing Ivanhoe in 1958 in a television remake of Walter Scott's classic novel. Sir Roger was married four times. His second wife was the acclaimed singer Dorothy Squires and they were together for 15 years. From 1962 to 1969, Sir Roger became one of the UK's most popular TV stars playing the Saint, aka the debonair Simon Templar, a conman whose mission was stealing from the corrupt wealthy. In 1971 Sir Roger landed the joint lead role in the action/comedy TV show The Persuaders! Alongside Tony Curtis. Sir Roger played Lord Brett Sinclair and Curtis the self-made millionaire Danny Wilde. Sir Roger starred with Britt Ekland in the 1974 Bond movie the Man with the Golden Gun in which they faced by the evil Scaramanga, played by Sir Christopher Lee. The movie was one of seven 007 features with Sir Roger in the leading role. Sir Roger jokes around with the Duke of Edinburgh at the premiere of James Bond film Moonraker in 1979. Sir Roger was invited to perform a sketch along with Sir Michael Caine at the London Palladium in honour of the Queen Mother's birthday in 1990. Sir Roger was an active supporter of the global children's charity Unicef and got together with US comedian Whoopi Goldberg - and a muppet - in 2005 to front a campaign highlighting the impact of Aids and HIV on children. The actor received a knighthood for his charity work in 2003. Sir Roger was an international star throughout his life and was guest of honour at a racing event in Germany with his last wife, Kristina Tholstrop, in 2013. Sir Sean Connery pays emotional tribute to fellow Bond Sir Roger Moore. The original big screen 007 said he will “miss” Sir Roger, with whom he enjoyed a long friendship “filled with jokes and laughter”. Fellow former Bond Pierce Brosnan shared a picture of the pair together and said he was a big part of his life IN HIS OWN SUAVE WORDS... Women have played a big part in my life on and off-screen and I think I’ve finally worked them out. I always make sure I have the last word. That word is ‘yes’. ‘It just gave me a stiff neck’ — explaining why taking Viagra left him neither shaken nor stirred. Intelligence is my most endearing quality, according to [his wife] Kristina. That’s her Swedish sense of humour. Being eternally known as Bond has no downside. People call me Mr Bond when we’re out and I don’t mind a bit. Why would I? ‘I had creaking knees and my leading ladies could have been my granddaughters’ — on his last appearance as James Bond in A View To A Kill, aged 57. ‘I lie all the time. I say different people, otherwise you’ll upset somebody’ — on his favourite Bond girl. I’m one lucky b******. In my early acting years, I was told that to succeed you needed personality, talent and luck in equal measure. I contest that. For me it’s been 99 per cent luck. It’s no good being talented and not being in the right place at the right time. The saddest thing about ageing is that most of my friends are now ‘in the other room’. I miss David Niven the most. I still can’t watch his films without shedding a tear. Some of the things I’ve done in my life I’m ashamed of. We don’t talk about those, though. If I could give my younger self some advice it would be: ‘Grow up!’ I still have some of Bond’s suits in my wardrobe, but they don’t fit me now. In the 007 days I was so thin that if I turned sideways you could mark me absent. My mum instilled in me the proverb: ‘I cried because I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet.’ Those words are always with me and I’m a believer in showing kindness to others and not expecting repayment. Medicine has always fascinated me and I’m a hypochondriac. It’s not that I wake up every morning and think: ‘I’m dying.’ At my age, I know I am.
