Strap Wi-Fi jammers to teen as punishment People who commit cyber-crime should be forced to wear wifi jammers to prevent them using the internet, rather than being sent to prison, a senior UK police leader has suggested. While traditional crime is falling, computer based offences, including fraud, the sharing and viewing of indecent images and social media abuse, are soaring and now account for 40 per cent of all crime in the UK. But one senior officer has said sending such people to prison is not appropriate or effective and we need to find new ways to punish cyber-criminals. Chief Superintendent Gavin Thomas, who is the president of the Police Superintendents' Association, has suggested using technology to deprive offenders of access to the internet. He said convicted criminals could be fitted with electronic jammers around their wrists or ankles which blocked wifi signals and prevented them from going online. Basic wifi jammers are available cheaply and work by interrupting the frequency on which a signal is transmitted. Cybercrime - Most common UK online offences These are the ten most common cyber-crimes in the UK, with number of cases reported in the year to June 2016 1. Bank account fraud – 2,356,000 Criminals trick their way to get account details. For example: “Phishing” emails contain links or attachments that either take you to a website that looks like your banks, or install malware on your system. A 2015 report by Verizon into data breach investigations has shown that 23 pc of people open phishing emails. 2. Non-investment fraud – 1,028,000 AKA Ponzi schemes. Examples include penny stocks, pension liberation, and investment in commodities, such as wine or art, that later prove worthless 3. Computer virus – 1,340,000 Unauthorised software damages or takes control of your machine. For example: “Ransomware” encrypts your files and pictures then demands a payment to restore your access to it 4. Hacking – 681,000 Criminals exploit security weaknesses to illegally access other machines or networks. They steal sensitive data or subvert machines for their own purposes, such as sending spam or launching other cyber attacks 5. Advance fee fraud – 117,000 The victim is promised access to a great deal of money in return for a smaller upfront payment. For example, the classic “Nigerian Prince” email scam 6. Other fraud – 116,000 One example is “solicitor scams”, where a solicitor’s website is hacked, then clients asked to divert large payments into the criminals’ bank accounts. 7. Harassment and stalking – 18,826 Threats, abuse and online bullying – what’s commonly been termed “trolling” on social media 8. 7. BlackBerry ‘KeyOne’ launched at MWC 2017 BlackBerry KEYone returns with QWERTY keyboard running on Android BlackBerry launched a new smartphone called KeyOne, the last phone designed and engineered in-house by BlackBerry, ahead of the official commencement of MWC 2017 yesterday. The new BlackBerry KeyOne, which was earlier known with its codename called Mercury, sports the physical keyboard and comes with a large screen. “The new BlackBerry portfolio has a chance of success, because few companies now offer BlackBerry-style design and features, and the productivity-focused smartphone segment is underserved. But TCL must be careful not to price itself out of its target segment,” Ian Fogg, head of mobile analysis at IHS, said, adding: “Microsoft’s failure to establish Windows 10 Mobile as the enterprise smartphone OS provides a second chance for BlackBerry to re-establish its mobile market presence.” The KeyOne is a phone made by BlackBerry’s new hardware partner TCL. Announcing the KeyOne, BlackBerry on its blog said, ” KeyOne pairs the best of BlackBerry software and security with TCL’s commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable smartphones to markets around the world. And we are very enthusiastic about how our long-term partnerships with TCL and our other partners, BB Merah Putih in Indonesia and Optiemus for the Indian sub-continent, will ensure availability of BlackBerry-branded smartphones to every corner of the world.” The KeyOne comes with a 4.5-inch LCD display (resolution 1620 x 1080) and aspect ratio of 3:2 that would make browsing or reading an email a nice experience. It will sport a 2.0GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor and run on Android 7.1 Nougat with BlackBerry’s security-related tweaks. The device also has a physical keyboard under the screen, which is a rarity in smartphones these days. Further, it comes with 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via microSD (up to 2TB). On the camera front, it will sport a 12MP rear camera with aperture of F2.0 along with 8MP front camera with F2.2 aperture lens. The phone draws power from a 3,505 mAh battery with quick charging that should last a full day on a single charge. BlackBerry calls the feature “boost,” which puts the smartphone in battery saving mode while charging, so it charges even faster. The KeyOne also supports Quick Charge 3.0. BlackBerry claims you can get to 50 per cent in 36 minutes. Just like on other BlackBerrys, the keyboard is touch enabled that allows you to scroll by swiping over the keyboard. A new feature lets you to program all the hardware keys to do something on a long press. For instance, “B” can launch the browser, or “F” could launch Facebook. The traditional programmable BlackBerry “Convenience Key” is on the side. On the connectivity front, the new KeyOne comes with standard set of connectivity options, including 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v4.2, NFC, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB Type-C port. Consumers will also get the DTEK security app with monthly security patches. You will also find some BlackBerry Apps preloaded on the device including BlackBerry Keyboard, BlackBerry Hub and DTEK by BlackBerry. The black KeyOne will go on sale in April for $549 / £499 / €599 and will be available around the world through various retailers and carriers.
  8. Former President George W. Bush says it's important to have a free press Former US President George W Bush has said a free press is "indispensable to democracy" during a rare TV interview. He told NBC's Today programme a free media was needed to call those in power to account. President Donald Trump has feuded with some media groups since taking office, calling negative news coverage "fake". Mr Bush also said that the question of any links between associates of Donald Trump and the Russian government "does need to be answered". President Bush was speaking to Today's Matt Lauer ostensibly to promote his new book - a collection of portraits of military veterans he has met. Mr Bush said: "Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it's important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power." Mr Trump has branded some parts of the media as "enemies of America". Mr Bush said he had spent time in office trying to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin that he needed an independent media. "It's kind of hard to tell others to have an independent, free press when we're not willing to have one ourselves," Mr Bush said. 'We all need answers' Mr Trump's latest brush with the media was to announce that he was pulling out of the traditional White House Correspondents' Association dinner on 29 April. And on Friday, the BBC, CNN, Buzzfeed and the New York Times were among media groups barred from an off-camera informal briefing held by White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Mr Bush was also asked about whether any links between Trump aides and Russian officials during a presidential election campaign that was dogged by allegations of Russian hacking attacks should be formally investigated. The former president was promoting his book Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief's Tribute to America's Warriors, proceeds of which will go to help post-9/11 veterans and their families transition to civilian life. bbc

  20. Best Quotes from Albert Einstein Albert Einstein (March 14, 1879 – April 18, 1955), the famous theoretical physicist, developed the theory of relativity and is considered the father of modern physics. The nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer shared his impressions of Einstein by saying, “He was almost wholly without sophistication and wholly without worldliness . . . There was always with him a wonderful purity at once childlike and profoundly stubborn.” His sense of wonder mixed with native intelligence comes through so clearly in Einstein’s quotations. Upon refusing surgery at the age of 76, he said: “I want to go when I want. It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share, it is time to go. I will do it elegantly.” These quotes reveal Einstein as a person who clearly cared about the human heart, the health of the planet and the wonders of this magnificent universe. Best Quotes from Albert Einstein: Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts. Everything should be as simple as it is, but not simpler. Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. Not everything that can be counted counts and not everything that counts can be counted. Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. The splitting of the atom has changed everything except for how we think. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. A human being is part of a whole called by us the universe. There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. If there were any religion, which would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism. Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better. A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be. A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy? A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy? All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. Anyone who doesn’t take truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted in large ones either. Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex… It takes a touch of genius – and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction. Anger dwells only in the bosom of fools. Concern for man and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavors. Never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations. Everyone should be respected as an individual, but no one idolized. All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual. Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions. He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed. I am not only a pacifist but a militant pacifist. I am willing to fight for peace. Nothing will end war unless the people themselves refuse to go to war.” I believe that a simple and unassuming manner of life is best for everyone, best both for the body and the mind. I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious. I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones. Information is not knowledge. Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death. Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them. It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity. Joy in looking and comprehending is nature’s most beautiful gift. Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason mastery demands all of a person.
